2 OL Questions for Next Year

I have heard some really good things about Boffeli, does he push Ferentz for the starting job next year?

If Kouangjio commits to Iowa and I have heard good things about Van Stolen. Does either of these two push Zusevics for a starting job?

Thanks

I highly highly doubt it. He's a senior with a lot of experience, so he'd able to red shirt and Van Sloten makes a nice backup. I also like Donnal and Scherff to push for Tackle time in 2 years. I like our depth at OL and with the 2 we have recruited we are looking swell. If we get Kuandjio that would be amazing and the next 4 years look really good on the OL.

This is just my feeling, no inside info. I think Ferentz is our starting center for the next 2 years and Boffeli has a better chance to push for playing time at guard the next 2 years then slide over to center after Ferentz is done.

If Cyrus K. becomes a Hawk I dont see him beating out Zus for a starting spot. He could get some action as a sub or on goal line/short yardage situations.

I would submit that CK would have a better chance to unseat MZ than CB unseating JF. More than just about any other position, Center is just a spot you don't mess around with.

Boffeli is going to have a legit chance to push for a starting spot at OG in 2011. MacMillan arguably has a leg up on him ... due to getting quality starts in 2010. However, that said, from what "buzz" I had heard ... it sounds like Boffeli is one of the "risers" on the Iowa OL.

I have a very positive "gut feeling" about Scherff too. The big question that my "gut" has yet to answer is where he ends up playing ... OT or OG.

I really don't see Ferentz moving away from the C spot ... I just saw WAY TOO MANY positive things about his play on the field. Not only does James Ferentz have the knowledge of the game going for him ... he also has a great nasty streak.

I like the upside of Van Sloten too. I've liked some of what I saw out of him early in the season ... and he's a guy who seemed to continue to get looks from the coaches as the season progressed.

Ideally Iowa lands Cyrus Kouandjio because I could definitely see him pushing for early playing time as a back-up much like Dace Richardson in '05. I say this because I'm willing to bet that Iowa loses Reiff to the first round after the 2011 season.

I think Boffeli has a legitimate shot for playing time. I remember reading an online article at the CR Gazette about 6 weeks ago and the author indicated the coaches love this kid. Also, I believe he gained 30lbs from his 1st to 2nd year? We assume it should be easy for all of our lineman to get from 275 or 285 to 300 plus but it is harder said than done, but Boffeli has the frame and athleticism to carry 300lbs next season. It would be great to have multiple lineman at teh 300lb range. Having said that I agree with the other posters, James Ferentz is not going to lose his position in the near future. I see Boffeli competing for a starting position as a guard, since we are most vulnerable at those two positions. Van Sloten is a good talent, he may be one year away from starting tackle?

Yes and Yes. they will be pushing the starters, no doubt.

As others have said, J Ferentz is likely starter at Center for next two years. He made mistakes but the memory of his blocking the MU DL after losing his helmet is something that will stick with me for while.

CK would seem to have potential to play as freshman. Bulaga did it with positive results, although our OL is currently stronger than it was in 2007 . What I could see happen is CK playing at OG, similar to BB in 2007. Would be easier than starting at LT. Zus did well in 2010 so would be tough for any one to beat him out.

If history teaches us anything, Kouanyijo will never play a meaningful down at Iowa. As far as I can remember the three highest rated offensive lineman Iowa has recruited are Malcom Christie (kneck issues), Blake Larsen & Dan Doering. None of them played a meaningful down at Iowa.

Even Eubanks, who wasn't rated nearly as high as Doering had to wait until a walk-on left the program. There is nothing worse in college football than rating high school offensive lineman. Look at Gallery (offers from Iowa & Moo U), Steinbach (recruited as a tight end) & Nelson (a walk on).

Unlike basketball, it is really a crap shoot in trying to project offensive linemen. Look at Munoez's kid. Supposedly, he was greatest thing since sliced bread. He never started at Tennessee.

Dace Richardson was rated VERY highly out of high school as well. He played at every opportunity, and did very well. Bulaga was also a highly touted prospect. It is a crapshoot, but that doesn't mean that all 5* linemen are Sirens (Greek mythology reference for those that are confused).
