2 Walk-Ons

By "He" I mean Stephen McCarty a point guard who walked on the year before last and took a year off to work on his grade at kirkwood. He was discussed during prime time league but I called this with my first ever post. Not to brag or anything.

I have played against Steve for the past year or so and I am happy that he stuck around to finally get on the team. He was in the gym every day working out which is what you like to see from your walk-ons. Hopefully he only needs to see the floor in crunch time but he will bring some athleticism to the practices.

I still wish Dre could get a chance on the team. He is the type of player who could actually help during a game.

Interesting. Looks like both can contribute, at least as far as raising the level of competition in practice, perhaps even giving some relief minutes. Welcome to the team, Steve and Kyle.

If McCarthy has any talent at all, I bet he plays this year. We don't have a real PG backup other than Marble and I think he plays some. Good addition in my book.

Pretty impressive HS tape here, hopefully he's still improving, could be used to give Cartwright a breather this year.

I can see some of the box scores, but did anyone see him in the PTL?

They televised some of the PTL on 9.2 and I gotta say that it was some ugly basketball to watch. Other than being a good workout for the kids I would not put much stock in any of their performances in the PTL. It was like watching a pickup game but with uni's on instead of shirts vs skins.

McCarty had schollies from buffalo and Sacramento state.

I really don'y buy this. You don't turn down D1 scholarships to walk on at Iowa. I am aware that he is related Marble. He just isn't at that level. He will be a good practice player though.

I do remember seeing this, that he had the offers, but if grades were an issue, wouldn't that explain how he ended up at Kirkwood then to walk-on at Iowa? Maybe it wasn't his first choice.

Having another Marble on the team can't hurt! I have only seen him play very little, but he does have the skills to play the point. With the team that Fran has built, Stephen will be able to distribute the ball just fine in place of Cartwright. He should offer some good defense too.

I am aware that it was written but that seems like a classic case of kids saying they have offers that don't exist. I played with Steve everyday for the past year or so and he will be a good walk on. If Fran is counting on him to play actual minutes (which he isn't) then Iowa is in a world of trouble.

I don't understand the need of everyone on here to act like every new player is always going to play. One of the biggest weaknesses of the Lick era was not having any practice players so Jordan would have to go against Peterson and Payne in practice. They couldn't even have a 5 on 5 scrimmage due to a lack of players. I get mad even thinking about all the crap that Lickliter did here but not having walk ons due to his son is one of the worst of his offenses.

Thankfully Fran knows how to run a program and that includes having a capable scout team where Steve will be able to impersonate opposing quickness much better than anyone else on the roster.

Where do you play against him...on campus in pickup games? Every day? Must be nice to have that kind of time. What is the scouting report on him...too short, too slow, cannot handle or shoot?

We're back!!! Yeah buddy, two walk ons that will contribute 20+ mins a night! Going to be studs after their frosh year. Mark my word.

Yes, it is really strange for college students to have two hours in the evening to play basketball... If you are serious on the scouting report he is a weak shooter and undersized. He is likely 5'10 or so and just doesn't make a lot of good decisions with the ball. Like I said earlier, he will bring something that the other walk ons won't with his quickness and he has added a lot of bulk over the year. People just shouldn't be expecting him to actually contribute in games.
