He was simply stating the most recent 4 star OL recruits.
 
the rb situation is not that dire, Malloy was going to be scholarship player until he got in trouble, he has a chance to get his schollie back, 6'1 190 4.4 40 3*.
Dawson is a 2 year rb that is walking on former 3* on one site and a 4* on another, we lost Coker the 4* starter and gained Garmon a 4* rb with 4.4 40 speed, we lost McCall and replaced him with Barkley Hill who made the Parade Magazine AA.
lose 2 gain 4 i don't feel the need or worry about rb's,

Two immutable facts as long as KF is in charge:

1) Seniority and experience will get the nod over youthful talent.
2) Execution (to the point of perfection) is far more preferred over the potential risk of a youthful mistake.

Cases in point last year:
1) Herman and Derby over Fiedorowicz for most of the season. Why? Because they could block better? Meanwhile, the TE (an integral mainstay of the offense) production is almost non-existent during a season it was desparately needed.
(When the "light went on" regarding CJ, it wasn't so much for the player, it was for the coach realizing the risk / reward and potential / experience trade-off.)

2) Tobin over Walsh, Scherff and Donnal? Of course! There's no such thing as a 4* 6'5"+, 290#+ offensive lineman that could ever be ready to play before his sophomore (better yet, junior) year. Way to much possibility for lack of understanding this sophisticated offense and making an execution error.

3) During a year when the DL was getting pushed around -- allowing the opponent to basically establish the line of scrimmage 2 - 3 yards further downfield -- you basically sit your two, 290-300# run-pluggers in Cooper and Davis? Why, because they might overplay a gap (even though they would consume a blocker at the first level, rather than be a nothing more than a bug on the windshield) and supposedly have motor issues?

I'm just not that convinced that Iowa suffers from a talent issue as it suffers from a failure to use talent issue.

Yeah, not like Bulaga, Dace, Reiff saw time on the line as freshman or RS FR. or Scherff as a RS fr. OL do take time to develop. Not every time a kid is 290 lbs is it good 290 lbs. Also the blocking they do in highschool is not as good as what you need to have at Iowa, so usually experience does trump size. Not going to argue when you bring back the Tobin comment because he looked bad, but Scherff wasn't a world beater.

I also would say CJF looked down right bad at blocking early this year, and he wasn't setting the world ablaze with his offensive out put, so i don't have an issue with it. I think he'll be a stud next year as the light finally went on.

Ferentz plays the best players available at the position. Period. To think otherwise is to admit he'd sacrifice a win to play a guy who has been with the program the longest.

Plenty of guys who walk out on senior day who have limited/no playing time, but have stayed in the program.
 
Actually Dace Richardson played a lot as a true freshman. From U of I profile - "2005 - - Saw action at left tackle in opening win over Ball State as offense gained 441 yards total offense . . . saw action at left tackle at Iowa State as offense gained 173 rushing yards . . . saw action at left tackle in win over Northern Iowa as offense gained 496 yards total offense . . . saw action at left tackle at Ohio State . . . saw action at left tackle in win over Illinois as offense rushed for 301 yards and gained 476 yards total offense . . . saw action at left tackle in win at Purdue as offense gained season-best 535 total yards . . . saw action in win over Indiana as offense gained 425 yards total offense . . . saw action at left tackle vs. Michigan as offense gained 427 yards total offense . . . saw action at left tackle at Northwestern as offense gained 492 yards total offense . . . did not see action in win at Wisconsin . . . saw action in offense line in win over Minnesota as offense gained 613 yards total offense . . . did not see action in Outback Bowl vs. Florida. "

I have a minor theory on future OL at Iowa. If they look good in the all star games, they will do well. If they don't do so well-might struggle to see the field.. This is based mainly on Dace doing well in the US Army game and fellow Illinois recruit Dan Doering not looking nearly as good. (I said it was a minor theory...)
Based only on this, Kozan should see the field before Ward.
 
Silly me, but I am going to let our head coach,former NFL offensive line coach, decide who is more prepared to play on our offensive line, rather than the couch ''experts'' whose best move is to the fridge on saturday afternoon.

my post was sarcastic as all of those guys played as freshman. Pointing out that if you're talented you play before 2 or 3 years in the system.

Agreed. Even going back to the Gallery, Steinbach, Nelson line of 2002, those guys all played early in their careers.

I think it's pretty fair to say that if a player doesn't see significant playing time during or before his RS sophomore season (excluding JuCo's obviously), it's a good bet he won't be a great linemen for Iowa. There have been very few exceptions to this (Bruggeman in 2008 being one)

I would agree with great, but there have been a lot of guys that took some time to develop that have been pretty good. Zus, Gettis for this year's class. Now they're not Bulagas/Reiffs but they were good.

also, Eubanks started as a freshman, so they don't always turn out to be 1st rounders. ;)

As demonstrated in earlier posts, point 1 is not even close to an immutable fact. You can add Mike Jones to the list of numerous freshman who have made their way into the starting lineup.

Point 2 is well taken.
