197 Situation

Keep hearing so many different things about who will be wrestling at 197 for the Hawks this year. I was hoping some insiders could help clear up some rumors. It seems like it will be Wagner, Lira, or Ambrose.

There is talk on the other board that Ambrose is trying to make the cut, does anyone know if this is true? Also if it is, does anyone know how good Ambrose really is? When was the last time he wrestled outside the room? I do not remember him competing in any open tournaments or wrestle-offs?
If he could get down to 197 is he better then the other two?

Wagner seems like the front-runner but there is some talk he will not wrestle this year because of med-school? Does anyone know which way he is leaning?

Lira seems like the fall back option and seems to have had less success in open tournaments than Wagner?

I would think the 197 chances are:
Wagner 50%
Lira 35%
Ambrose 10%
Unknown 5%
Do others agree with these %'s or am I off?

Anyway I am kinda rambling but I need my wrestling fix.

Ambrose last wrestled in the spring of 2010. He went undefeated wrestling in various open tourneys that our RS frosh and other non-starters tend to compete in. He didn't wrestle the first part of that season so I'm assuming he had difficulty getting down to weight. He didn't wrestle at all last season.

Correct, Ambrose didn't make weight for wrestle offs when he was a Sophmore and many thought that he would give Lofthouse all he could handle. He got down to weight and wrestled in some opens later in the year and did very well. He is a really good wrestler who is very good from his feet. That said, I don't think that there is a very good chance that he gets to weight. I would be VERY surprised if Ambrose made it to 197 but if he could do it and still keep his strength then he would be the guy.

I think that your percentages are probably pretty close. I expect to see somewhat of a mix of Wagner and Lira this year with Wagner winning out and being the guy come tournament time.

Thanks fulsaas. I'm hoping for Ambrose, despite it being a long shot, because that would be our best scenario by far. Maybe McD could offer some dieting and lifestyle tips to help Ambrose.
