'16-'17 schedule. Prepare for the big boys!

Things are gonna get a little tougher as we'll see PSU, OSU, and Michigan return to the schedule.

Iowa gets Big Ten big boys in 2016, 2017 | TheGazette

IIRC, they'll be 7 yrs between home games vs OSU.

Indiana and OSU open with conference games on Sept 2nd.

Black Friday vs Nebby still around in '16-'17. I'm certainly all for that.

I'm not so sure PSU will be all that big of a boy by then? The sanctions will have taken their toll by that time. Outside of Michigan and OSU, everybody else is a complete guess three years from now. What would a team thought in 2010 if they saw Iowa on the 2013 schedule? probably a much different feeling than what showed up in reality three years later.

I will bet $1000 that sanctions don't "take their toll" on PSU.

I tend to agree. It says something about a fanbase that can turn a history of turning a blind eye to horrific child abuse into them being unfairly persecuted and making it a rallying cry. I am aghast anyone would root for or play for the team but to each his own.

That aside, it will be nice to lose to some teams we are supposed to lose to. Ill take an *** kicking against OSU to a close loss to Central Michigan any day.

PSU may not have any troubles, but it will be very difficult when their roster includes not quite 60 scholarship players.

The good thing about this is no more stinking byes in October. The bad only one home game in October 16 barely october1 more than likely homecoming a tough ticket.

They start cutting back to 60 this year, correct?
And that lasts 5 years?
That means that when the Hawks play them in 2017,they will still be down by 25 schollys.
Anyone that thinks losing 30% of your schollys does not have an impact is nuts.
We are catching them at a good time, then they can move off our schedule for another 4 years or so.

I like our schedules for these two seasons. Good home slate in 2016 and our road foes in 2017 are not too bad considering we have 5 road games. I think these two seasons could send KF out with a bang as he draws close to retirement.

Wrong. They cut back from 25 to 15 each year for 4 years so at the end they will be at 60 scholarships in the previous 4 years. They will not be down to 25 scholarship players.

Uuuuummmmmmm, do some of you guys actually think that losing that many scholarships won't have a significant affect? That is pretty unlikely. Good luck I guess.

Last year was as good as its going to get for Penn State football for a long, long time. The loss of scholarships is going to have an effect. When they start getting injuries, especially at key positions, they will feel it. In 2016, they are going to be like an FCS team, scholarship wise. Then in 2017, when those sanctions are lifted, they can't get back to 85 right away because the Big Ten has scholarship limits in place.

LOL.
In sheer numbers they'll be FCS, but in quality of player they'll be top 4 in the B1G, probably higher.

Like I said, I'll bet anyone $1000 that these weak sanctions don't "take a toll".
Its a tiny speed bump.

They're basically going to be UNI in numbers & Ohio St in quality.
Two deeps full of 4 stars. But they're going to struggle? LOL

And once these weak sanctions are over, PSU will be positioned, without the handcuffs of Joe Paterno, to be Ohio St's one true consistent threat.

Pardon the not so smart guy here... But your last point... I don't get it.

Does that mean there's a limit on scholarships a school can offer each year for each class?

Not a limit on the number of offers a school can hand out but a limit on the number of scholarships they can fill in each class. IIRC, the number is 25.

OIC. Thx section. That'll never work. I'm moving to SEC country.

He said down by 25. 85 - 60 = 25.

But most likely at the end of their sanctions, their scholarship count will be something like 57 or 58.

I'm just glad its not the same old lame rotating every two-years crap ...where we miss multiple teams for 2 or 4 years in a row

Umm if KF actually does his job in rebuilding this program shouldn't we be one of the big boys once again? Aside from getting over the hump with the Nebby Black Friday game OSU is the one team in the BoneG where Iowa seems to find a way to lose, and at least until this year most of those games have been close.

mailbag.....

Ted from St Petersburg, Fla., writes: Hawkeye fan here, so drawn to Iowa's crossover schedule. Certainly there is parity throughout the league, but 2016 and 2017 seems like a major challenge for Iowa, as facing Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State in East Lansing seems like a daunting task. (A road game to Rutgers doesn't seem "easy" either.) I am sure that the Hawks are not backing down from these powerhouses, but does the future promise a rotation that includes the others in the East, like Indiana or Maryland?

Brian Bennett: Ted, you'll definitely see different opponents from the East on the schedule, but right now the Hawkeyes should be flattered. That's because with parity-based scheduling, the league is basically rating Iowa as strong enough to play some of those opponents you mentioned. Want an easier schedule? Keep going 4-8. Don't think you want that, though.

Yeah, they're in trouble. LOL
Maybe a better way for some to understand this is to think of PSU as being restricted to a travel roster all the time. Not that big of a deal.
