13-0 Iowa not in the playoffs?

It is simple undefeated Iowa would have played exactly two ranked teams, and possibly only three teams with a winning record, and started the year somewhere around the 60th best team in the country. Too big a hill to climb and not enough teams ranked higher than them to get in the top 4.

A few years ago, espn ran an article about getting to the bcs national championship. Basically, you have to start the year at 13 or higher (or something close to that) and never drop in ranking due to a loss or you are out, even if you are undefeated. Same applies to the playoffs. And that's also assuming your schedule doesn't stink.

Let's be realistic - other than potentially MSU, Iowa doesn't play anyone this year that will have beaten anyone of consequence, and they started in too deep of a hole. I don't think that they will end the season in the top 25, even if they run the table from here on out.

That is correct. A 13-0 Iowa team with this weak schedule would not have been guaranteed a place in the playoffs. Probably would have required a situation where the other three teams were each carrying 2-3 losses.....

Do you consider this to be a fact, or an opinion? For either answer, what is your evidence to support it?

I thought Auburn last season started the season unranked? They had like 2 wins the year before and were not expected to be very good.

If Ole Miss and Miss. St can get by Prysbeterian and Tenn-Martin, this weekend, they are in good shape to make the playoffs.....again, these two schools have the blueprint down...play nobody in the non-conference, and win most of your league games, and you make the playoffs.

Iowa needs to play zero tough schools in the non-conference now....sadly, the playoff format encourages it.

Ole Miss and Miss St., and Auburn also play, every year:
Alabama
LSU

And those two teams are almost always in the top ten with no or one loss when they play. Then, to go undefeated, they play a Florida or Georgia team in the top ten with one loss or no losses and beat them. That's murderers row, and means that they probably play and beat at least 3 top ten one or 0 loss teams to get to the NC. They also aren't starting out the year at #60 in the Sagarin rankings.

It's like playing Ohio State 2002 three times every single year. When was the last time Iowa won three games vs top ten opponents in a year before the bowl game? When is the next time that they are likely to have a chance to do it again? It certianly wasn't this year -- Iowa hasn't beaten an FBS team with a winning record. They've only played one team with a winning record, and looked terrible against them. Additionally, if Iowa were to make it to the conference title game, they will have only played at most 4 teams with a winning record.

Ole miss will have played 8 teams with winning records. It's not even close.

Well to answer your question, I for one would consider this to be a fact while you on the other hand, I am certain, would consider it to be an opinion. The great thing about message boards though is that neither of us is required to provide evidence to support anything that is said here.....
