How will staff use the coming month no bowls?

More time to focus on recruiting. No worry about bowl prep. That takes a lot of time in December. That is a void and hope to do better with recruiting and player and program development.

How player dev without practice

Meet with players, lot to cover...you dont get that time when you recruit and prepare for a game...you dont give anything enough attention until you geto n plane and go to bowl. Same for recruiting, too. There is a lot of work to do here, there always is.

Last game for JVB, not season he would want, what has he shown you this year

Cliche, but you learn a lot about people in times of challenge..dont think anyone has handled it better than him...hasnt gone way we wanted...he has handled it with class and leadership and has remained positive. He has not changed. That is what you hope to see. Has conducted affairs at higher level.

James Ferentz last game, dad hat on at some point?

Yeah. We have five kids and two daughters, nobody asks about them..we are proud of all of them. James happens to be a guy on our team...I will be a dad and I have had that experience once..special thing to be down there. For the other parents, first time down there...special

Legacy of SR class

I have a lot of respect for each of them..its hard to become a senior at any program..what they are required and asked to do is not easy..have to perservere. Injuries, setbacks...we expect them to be better citizens than rest of student body...different standard...evaluated by a lot of people 12 times a year. To run that race and do it the right way, tremendous respect for each of them..some played a lot, some didn't be it medical or getting beat out by someone. Bottom line, they well established who and what they are.

Six games decided by three or less think what could ahve been

I will after its over...we knew going in there would be close games, nature of our program...the better you can handle those the better you can find way to be the victor in those games and contend for titles...when you come up short, the results go in the other direction.

It won't affect game. Coaches leave all the time. Common in this profession. Other than to wish him luck. James Dobson went over there too...people move

Any hard feelings him at another Big Ten school

People move and you can't control where they go. I try not to ever decide for our staff what is in their best interest. We have had guys who had opportunities to leave. yo have to do what is best for you at end of day in any profession

Sat, no pressure on passer, secondary break down...what clean up

Easier said than done..talked about Martinez being a better player...gardner at QB a couple years ago didnt add much, now dynamic...its a challenge when have guy who can run...break contain and throw, both can do that. Neb has three excellent receiers, lot of pressure

Degree of confidence program has beetter days ahead of it

I believed it 14 years ago...pick any of our best years and can list 10 thnigs we could have done better...I remember watching Minnesota game that felt good in 2002...great to be there, felt good all way home..when I watched tape saw a lot we could have done better

Follow up, how char talent level on team comapred to other big ten teams

We are 4-7 right now. That is what we are..be it talent, coaching, performance....I read something this morning, mountain and molehill...never quite as bad as you think or quite as good as you think. Our focus is on playing againset a taem that is talented...maybe as well coached as anyone in league and talented...these guys are high level...our challenge right there.

I cant do anything about that...our fans have been great. Have been great this year, too. Our fans have been phenomenal. Whatever happens, happens. I dont expect a lot of students here, first time we have had home game day after Thxgiving.

ball goes where it goes...deemed by who QB thinks is most open and coverage...just complete it and make yards is what matters.

JVB respect you have, does that play into fact he has taken every snap despite struggles?

No. This a time you could have made argument..PSU game...we kept all starters in, felt like that was best for our team..otherwise we have been trying to score and win. James is our starting QB. Felt like best thing to do. I do have great respect for him, great young man

QB typically different than other positions...cant usually just throw someone in there..I guess you could but we havent

1999, 2000, more flex at QB

Didnt have a clear stater...McCann emerged in 2000...Kyle was a better QB at that point than he was in 1999...emerged as our guy..Brad came in, unique talent...we integreated him in 2001 on a limited basis and there were circumstances that justified that...then he ran the race in 2002, Chandler in 2003 and tate in 2004...if you have a reason to do things, you do it

The kiss of death is highlighted. He really believes Iowa is a "3 point" team. Even when they play CMU. Hayden Fry told his charges to go "run up the score" on the Iowa State's of the world. Now the Cyclones own the Hawkeyes because of Kirk's so-called "Classiness".

When you enter off season, is Rudock's to lose as QB

As all of you know, he ha snot played...I dont know how anybody.....to me every posiution will be open..we are a 4-7 team. If we were 11-0, things would be open then, too. There is no entitlement in sports. There is no royalty system..everyone has to earn their keep every day..one of few arenas with fair competition..everyone has a chance to start regardles of age.

Is he backup now becaues two other guys redshirting?

That is a part of it.

How much has hangning on to redshirts hurt depth there...and have Canzerio and Malloy....

With that position its different...with Canzeri a health issue on top of it. Had he been healthy in August, he would have played. But he wasn't. Mike was emergency guy...were on thin ice there..Malloy injured last week and didn't make trip...nature of that position.

Basically putting these three responses together Kirk is saying that Rudock is a giant flaming pile of crap and he's only listed as backup because the guys that would perform more admirably are redshirting.
