10 true freshman

have now played. Per post game interview with Kirk, that makes it a record number for true freshman to play.

I don't know if that's a good or a bad sign.

I think it means it could be a rough year (except we do have a great schedule) but probably bodes well for the future. Kind of similar to the '07 season when Kirk had over 30 first and second year gusy playing but it set the stage for a couple of great seasons.

Or it could mean that we have some very talented underclassmen that will benefit from early playing time. They wouldn't have had to play Canzeri, I think they just wanted to get his feet wet. If we have a problem it will be on the defensive side of the ball. How many of the true freshman are used on D. Law will be a starter by the end of the year. He's playing special teams with a lot of authority. Thanks though, I always appreciate the glass half empty guys.

What is SunBelt? Like HS? We shouldn't of played anything but freshman and a few sophs. 95th in country in defense. Weak. Good thing we have two weeks to figure a few things out.

If you don't like it GTFO of my thread :)

It means it's a weird year, half way between a reload and a rebuild. The talent is better in a lot of cases in the lower classes, but they don't have the experience the sophomores and juniors do, so the coaches are probably trying to get a feel for what is the best combination of players.

I don't know that this has anything to do w/ it, but any thoughts on the attrition issue? When you give guys reps as true frosh, I think it gives them a taste of the experience and keeps guys motivated. Giving Canzeri a handful of carries and getting many other frosh reps on ST can be a great way to keep younger guys engaged and invested.

That's the bottom line to why the 10 freshman are out there. I've seen recently on this board (or somewhere in Hawkeye internet land) where it's been broken down on the attrition of a few recruiting classes that is now coming back to hurt the depth chart. Hence the fact there are 10 walks on in the two deeps as well.

I think it's not as simple as them being more talented than some upperclassmen, though it appears that is definitely part of the equation. I have a suspicion part of it is also to keep kids motivated, engaged, interested and most importantly, invested. I think the talent level issue is definitely part of it, but I don't think that is the only reason. They could run any guys down on kickoff they want, but they are choosing a number of true frosh.

I think its a great sign. We are not leaning heavily on any of them and it means we have 10 guys with experience for the next 4 years.

I think it is becoming a more common thing occurring all around the country. The best player at the time plays. Dose not matter if you are a Sr. or Frosh. The best player or the player who is showing the best performance as of late gets the playing time. At Iowa, KF likes to experiment, as he says he likes to do. He plays the Frosh to not only prep for the future but because they are the ones that come in with the mentality that they can play with the big boys and perform with the likens of the coaches.

I think it is fair the say also that KF and staff find the best players to fit his system for the present and future. He get's the diamonds in the rough's like the Cazzeris, Morris, Klug, and so on. They are smart and football savvy. Much to his likens.

Sorry but being Gatorade Player of the Year in Iowa as a junior and senior and three time first team all-state does no way in hell make Jamie Morris a "diamond in the rough".

Ok, so you take Morris out of the equation. You get the point!

By the way, we as Iowans knew Morris is and will be a stud, what other big program out there offered him? If not a lot then he may to others be a diamond in the rough for the Iowa program. That Chad Greenway type of player that only SD knew about. Much like Klug. The state of Iowa knows Morris, but who else?

I could be wrong, but I think Morris let it be know pretty early that he was going to be a Hawkeye, which would make the number of offers he received kind of meaningless.
