Not that this matters, but this is a play right out of Hayden's PR play book. He attacked the media with the same sort of passive aggressiveness indicating that they didn't know dick about football pretty much every October. It's actually tame compared to Hayden, he was always miffed at media criticism and he let them know it.
No comparison. HF didn't do nepotism. KF didn't have the scandals (we'll never know about the Rose Bowl fumbles). HF was always the same and could make the people he was challenging laugh. Just like Reagan making Mondale laugh about the age question.

I don’t remember any of this, how I remember it Hayden had a decent relationship with most of the media and if he did get salty it was for good reason. What we have here is completely different, we have an Iowa team that is beyond bad on offense and the person responsible is the coaches son. A HC can get away with some snark when the program is winning but the leash tightens when the program turns to dogshit and is a joke in the National media. I don’t remember Hayden facing the same level of criticisms.

Look, I think Kirk should be held to the fire, but I also think, he has won a lot of games and the season hasn't played out yet, let's see how it finishes. He thinks he should have more good will. I do too personally, but I think obviously changes need to be made on offense.
To be clear I'm not in favor of getting rid of Kirk for reasons I stated above. I just think his kid needs to go.

Good point. I looked at that comment from BF "We have to make the makeable plays" as coach speak for my God Spencer you have a guy running 5 yards from you get him the ball and he walks in for the score against Illinois. Spencer freaked out threw it 2 yards into the ground when a D line guy scared him. Most fans are going to say Spencer is terrible and his play shows he is, but you know as a coach in his position he can't say that. Therefore, we get the makeable play bullshit.
I was right near that play where Petras threw it into the ground. He wasn't nervous at all. He did a Jon Lester pickoff move.

I know we won't agree on this and it's not probably worth arguing, but he doesn't.

That's an "on paper" relationship meant to get by the nepotism laws.

Kirk is Gary's boss when it comes to football and GB isn't doing anything to BF.
I know all of that... and I knew you guys would eat me up on it. Which is what I was hoping for. On paper is all that matters. You're opinion or idea of what you think it is, is what doesn't matter. The actual arrangement DOES matter. Ya get that right too? Like, Kirk couldn't say he has any power there or then there would be a problem. Right or wrong, that question needs to be pointed at his direct superior, which in this case is NOT Kirk Ferentz. I'll never argue that it's a dumb way to have them have it set up.

I know, all under the table to skirt the rules and yadda yadda and Kirk is the real boss and all that - I do, i get that as much as anyone... what I am saying is, legally, the question is not being pointed at the right spot so it's another layer of shit that makes it even bigger pressure cooker.

Me too - and frankly, I don't think that will solve much. He could put a card board cut out of the "Most Interesting Man" in the world from the Dos Equis commercial on the sidelines and and call that the "Iowa OC"... that doesn't change our line play or a generational poor QB in Spencer Petras. it's the most over rated position in the program.

Really? Listen to 3 minutes of this tirade on the Media, and you'll say, oh, what Kirk said was fairly tame.

I was disappointed yesterday after I thought he handled Saturday's questions well. What he did yesterday was draw more attention to the guy's column that ripped him.

I get that it's human nature to defend yourself. And in this case, he's also a father defending his son. As a father, I know I would have the same feelings. And that's the biggest problem in this situation.
Ironically that guy was doing his job a million times better than either of the Ferentz' this year!!

Kirk dug his hole deeper with his demeaning not only the reporter, but the profession. It's not a good look for him or the University. He let his temper influence his behavior, not good. The President of the University needs to address this with Kirk and Barta. Barta needs to write up a written reprimand for Kirk's incident file which is a routine personnel practice. Kirk needs to write a letter of apology to the reporter and be instructed to issue an oral apology to people in the sport reporting profession. Don't look for Iowa Football to get many AP votes in future polls.

The axiom, "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen." seems to apply here. The Athletic Dept has already settled one gender lawsuit and another racial one is winding its way though the legal system. Both involved football. I would add that the reporter's "interrogation" is nothing compared to what may be ahead on the witness stand before lawyers. I haven't done it but a letter to the President's office is on my mind.

I didn’t hear anything that was disrespectful to the writer that put down his profession. Cripes he had everyone laughing.

Thanks for sharing though, I miss Ole Hayden
He said that people are idiots and people who read what some clueless reporter wrote are garbage... like he said that in the first minute of the presser. Show me where Kirk said anything like that?

Dude, let it go. Hayden was the type he can call someone an idiot and they all laugh. KF doesn’t have that same personality.

I am not holding on to anything.... I'm stating that Hayden Fry ripped on the media every random weekday presser he had in the 80's. I said that this was straight out of Hayden's playbook. It is. I didn't say that Hayden wasn't funnier and a better stand up comedian than Kirk, I said, this is straight out of Hayden's playbook vs the media. It is.

This isn't true and I think you know it but are you're going to dig your heels in on this anyway. Hayden Fry was LOVED by the media....let me say that again....LOVED. The local media wasn't scared of asking the wrong question to Hayden for fear he'd go off on them and they'd be out of a job like they are with Captain Kirk. Kirk has a little Bill Belichick in him, at times he can be a Fort Knox when it comes to trying to pry information out of him and can dodge/deflect questions with the best of them. Hayden wasn't that way at all, he let it all hang out and reporters loved him for it. Hayden was capable of coming down on the media but typically had a good reason and he often put his psychology degree to good work.

There probably isn't a reporter who covered Iowa more than Mike Hlas during the Hayden years and he had this to say about Hayden and his dealings with the media:

So, Hlas says Fry had at least one blow out a year with the media and a lot of people pointed at the firestorms but deep down he was a great guy that they all loved. Do you think he'd say something similar about Kirk? I think he would.

Weird, a page straight from that. You dip shits spin whatever I say out of context. I literally said Fry often ripped on the media. He did. He was often way more up front about it and didn't mix words.

Here is a former media member saying essentially what i am saying

Here is Marc Morehouse agreeing with him

but SUUURE I'm just digging my heels in over this.

You guys never change and I'll never stop coming back

That's not true. But...hot takes are what internet forums are made for.
He did when things weren't going well. It's amazing how time can make everyone just forget. Kirk will get the same treatment 20 years after he's gone, I don't know much, but I know that.

The comparison with Fry just isn't realistic. KF doesn't do blowouts with the media. He has abusive control.

The comparison with Fry just isn't realistic.
You aren't realistic, I just posted a video where Fry went on a media tirade. What he said is way more over the top then what Kirk said. It's not only realistic, it's got video fucking evidence.

I love it when you're dead wrong on something and you just keep digging your heels in deeper and deeper. Now you're dropping F bombs. ewwwww...Hayden called someone an idiot....bad bad man! lol

I've tried to explain to you the difference and I think deep down you know the difference as you're not stupid but you've got a post on a internet forum to defend and by gawd that's what you're going to do.
