10-23 Bowl Projections Thread

Outback Bowl would be a big disappointment to many fans + been there, done that attitude. I can't imagine much interest in this game especially against Miss State.

I guess it's a good thing that we have gotten to a place where we are disappointed about going to the Outback Bowl. That means we have gotten so good we expect to be in at least a BCS or Rose Bowl every year right? I can remember when I was little watching the Hawks with my dad and year after year after year they would lose games. He would have been elated even one of those years to have gone to the Outback Bowl. Thankfully, Hayden Fry came in & he was able to experience a few good bowl games before he died but I still think he would be pretty excited even today just knowing that Iowa made a bowl game after all those losing years. I guess a lot of you are too young to have gone through 20 years of losing so maybe don't appreciate where we are now as much as some of us do.

I was hoping for s BCS game, but realistically thought Outback or CapOne from the get go.

Not being Debbie Downer, but with a young OL, LBs and CBs it is just where I thought we would be.

I will never be disappointed with a CapOne or Outback bid...great bowls.

I think it is a huge stretch to even think the Hawks will make a Jan 1 bowl game at all the way they are playing....I figure a 7-5 or 8-4 team isn't going to make the Outback bowl. But even if they do you are right it will be such a huge disappointment i don't see the fans traveling worth a crap.

All the teams in the Big Ten get the same amount of money. So outside a BCS bowl it doesn't matter what bowl we go to. Gator Bowl would be nice because it has that fresh taste to it. Gator Bowl is a long time traditional bowl too.

Doesn't take long for fans to become spoiled! It was not that long ago we were not even Bowl eligible. Last year we had a miracle season! We forget that there were sveral games we were fortunate to win! If all of our luck had been bad we would not have been bowl eligible, but we had a fantastic year & won our first major bowl game in 50 years! Now after 2 losses to ranked teams we are complaining about a January 1st Bowl Game! Remember the 60s & 70s twenty years without a winning season & I attended most of those games. We would have been happy for a winning season! I know a lot of fans want us to be like the big boys that get all those big name recruits, but that has not happened in my 71 years and probably won't happen in the next 71. The last 10 years have been the best decade in the history of Iowa Football. We are over achievers and should be damn proud of it! GO HAWKS!! No matter what bowl game you go to I will be proud to be a Hawkeye!!

I think a couple of you aren't quite understanding the difference between expecting to go to a BCS bowl THIS year and expecting to go to a BCS bowl EVERY year. Many years, Iowa fans would be glad to go to the outback bowl just like in 2008. This isn't one of those years. I still think Iowa fans will go to the game but you're all kidding yourselves if you wouldn't be at least a little disappointed.

This is exactly it. When we made the Outback in the 08 season, it was awesome! Coming off a no bowl season it was a great thing to go to Tampa. This season we are coming off of an Orange Bowl win and a season that returned a large amount of starters. An at-large BCS bowl was the least acceptable bowl during the preseason, it was either Rose or BCS title. So when your expectations are that high for a season, going to the Outback Bowl is a severe disappointment. Next year, my guess will be that Outback/Cap One will be good bowls to go to again.

Exactly. Some years it's great to go to the Big 10's 4th best bowl game. This isn't one of those years. Next year will be.

 You mind telling everyone who will jump ahead of Iowa for the Outback bowl? Northwestern? Illinois? Michigan?

Some of you need that kick to the nuts now to get it over with and face reality that Iowa is probably going to the Outback or Cap One, then that way the meltdown won't be quite as bad.

At this point the only BCS Bowl I see Iowa getting to is the Rose and that is as the automatic qualifer and they now need help in getting that done, because even if Iowa does win out (along with Wisconsin) Iowa won't get an at large BCS bid over Ohio St or Michigan St even when they beat both. Well maybe they might over MSU, but no way, no how does a BCS bowl take Iowa over Ohio St.

Agreed. Personally, I received my kick in the nuts on Saturday. I'm back to earth and ready to cheer the hawks on to victory.

You can tell a lot about a person by how he responds to defeat. Winning is easy.

I think some of you are completely kidding yourselves if you think Iowa will not travel well to a non-BCS bowl this year. Iowa would travel well to the Little Caesers bowl if it were in it, let alone Jan. 1 bowl in Florida. I'm just as disappointed to see the NC talk go away as anybody, but if you think there are that many fans out there who cancel bowl trips this year cause its not in Pasadena or Glendale, you will be seriously mistaken. Things happen during a season that make a huge difference in the outcome, particularly injuries. This is not the same team to start the season, no team is. We have been masacred at LB recently and that, amongst other things, was evident sat. Roll with the punches people. To say the expectations weren't high would be a lie, but reading this thread makes me think you guys would just rather have Iowa say "H*ll NO!" to any bowl invitation that isn't stamped BCS. Keep the bowl reps coming in and W's on the record and Iowa will end up right where it deserves to be at the end.

You're also kidding yourself if you believe the same number of fans will turn out for an Outback Bowl as they would a Rose Bowl. I know quite a few people that were hoping and praying for the Rose this year, because they were setting aside time and money to go see Iowa play in one of the most prestigious bowl games, myself and family included. If we make it to the Rose, then damn right, I'm spending that money and booking hotels in Pasadena. However, if we get relegated down to Cap One/Outback, i'll use that money on other things like house upgrades and so on. If we make the Rose Iowa takes around 40k with them if not more. If they make Outback, it'll be around 20k if that.

Let's beat Michigan State. That would change everything. Beat 'em and see what happens.

If we lose to MSU, then I agree that the Outback Bowl is more realistic. Tampa is a great venue so I for one would love to go back if that is the bowl slot we earn.

given the preseason expectations, outback would be a huge kick in the nuts this season. sorry if I sound elitist but given the preseason expectations and guys Iowa had coming back, this was THE year Iowa should've gotten to the rose bowl.

I agree. Outback Bowl next year would be great. But not this year--this year should have been a BCS Bowl year.

That said, I am confident that all of us Hawk fans will follow the team to FL and cheer loudly.

for what its worth, the term "January Bowl," doesn't carry the same meaning as it used to. The bowl season has become so watered down with games, (not complaining, just saying) that there are tons of games in January. Some of which are not even elite bowls. Now in the Big Ten, I think 4 of our 7 non-BCS bowls are all on January 1, so 5 or maybe 6 Big Ten teams will be playing in January. Also.... we play the SEC in the first 3, so the difference between the Cap One, Outback, and Gator is only matchup and destination driven (and all 3 are in FL). All 3 of those bowl go hand in hand for me, I'm sure some of you will think otherwise.

If they make Outback, it'll be around 20k if that.

This thread makes it sound like Iowa will barely sell its ticket allotment, let alone 20K. There's not too many schools across the country that will roll out 20-25K fans for a bowl game, Iowa is one of them. 20K is nothing to shake your head at. Obviously the Rose would have more fans, but the Hawkeye Nation wasn't completely ROSE OR BUST, I can guarantee that.
