The 2008 Iowa football team: Most talented ever?

Agreed, the one big difference is probably Greene at RB. The guy was just a game changer. Then again, how well would the team have done with Jewel at RB? I'd say 7-5, 6-6, which is right around where 2001 ended up. (6-5 plus a win in the bowl game, IIRC).

The 2008 Iowa football team: Most talented ever?

You mean Oklahoma and Florida. And Florida would have destroyed us with Tebow and Percy Harvin. But like you said, USC was pretty unbeatable--look at what they did that year to Ohio State and Penn State. Iowa was the Big Ten's best team that year, but the Big Ten was also HORRIBLE. If I...

    Receiver production in 2012

I agree with your analysis--Staggs looked pretty solid when the ball was thrown his way last year. It'll be interesting to see if Bullock gets any work outside, especially if he's beaten out at RB by DJ or one of the freshmen.

    Phil Parker 4/11 Presser Transcript

One concern I have is that Coach Davis noted the WRs lack of speed. That's not going to help our CBs work on their bump and run skills at all. I like Lowery, but I just cant shake the picture of Kenny Bell running right by him against Nebraska (pretty sure that was Lowery).

    Greg Davis Transcript 4/11

The two backs he's talking about are Bullock and DeAndre. He's very high on CJ--great to hear! We're going to need strong TE play, especially since WR seems to be a bit weak. I think the running game will turn out fine in the end just based on talent and depth at OL (though admittedly not...

    Interesting

Wisconsin's population is twice as large of Iowa's, plus they don't have to compete with another in-state BCS school. The Milwaukee metropolitan area is around four times as large as Des Moines', and Madison is comparable in size to DM. I don't really understand how Iowa and Wisconsin are on...

    Rittenberg Article on JVB/Davis

I do think we see the backs catch the ball a lot more this season ... and not just because of Davis. Canzeri displayed great hands in the bowl game, Bullock started the year off at WR, and Kirk's comments last week strongly suggested that we will see a more direct role from Brad Rogers in the...

Big Ten Returning Starters for 2012

I'd love if we start 5-0 ... but I just don't see it happening with this young of a team. Chances are the ball won't bounce our way against NIU, ISU, Minny, or even UNI and we'll lose one of those games.

I just want to get this post out of the way now

Daniels outplayed Ballard and Binns in 2010 and, once healthy, was our best D-lineman last year as well. Nardo emerged as a capable DT last year, but now he's gone as well. LeBron Daniel really won't be missed at all. Senior or not, I don't think I ever saw the guy make a play. IIRC...

Former Texas RB says Greg Davis is going to Iowa

ISU plays against several team in Texas on an annual basis, so it's not shocking that they have a recruiting edge there against us. I'm willing to bet that we sign a lot more kids from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and maybe even Illinois than the Clones. IIRC, O'Keefe was partly responsible for...

    Hlas Article

Here are Mike Hlas' inputs on the coaching changes ... Quick thoughts on the changes to Iowa’s football staff | TheGazette I'm with Mike (and John for that matter). I don't know why internal hires are being so highly criticized. Coach Parker is a young guy who is very well respected by...

Rumor - Vegas saying O'Keefe might be gone

I heard KOK is going to move over to the DC job--he's already an expert at stopping offenses on third down.

    Wil we load the box?

Lol that's actually a good attitude to have. I'm just worried that our offense will force things to much with marvin/coker and put our defenses in short fields. If Iowa can survive the first quarter, we'll be fine. But if we get in a big hole to begin with (14-0 or greater), I think it's...

    Wil we load the box?

Dude ... this is exactly the kind of offense that Iowa actually prepares very well for. We struggle against quarterbacks that can scramble and throw the ball accurately. But pure running quarterbacks play right into our scheme (see Juice Williams and Illinois in 2007, Josh Nesbitt and Georgia...

    Purdue Scout: Sizing Up Short

I think Jon nailed the biggest difference between Short and Still/Worthy/Martin: Purdue's supporting cast on the d-line is not nearly as good. I think Iowa needs to counter Purdue's stunts with counters, misdirections, screens, etc. And Purdue's pass defense is just 8th in the Big 10, so...

No need to worry about Detroit or Albuquerque

Iowa needs to win one of the next two and hope Ohio State and Illinois lose out while Northwestern only wins one of the next two (or lose both). I think a 7-5 iowa team would be picked over a 6-6 Ohio State team--just don't see the Buckeye faithful being willing to travel much to see that team...

Been 5 days, here are my new thoughts...

Ok man, I understand you're mad, and justifiably so ... But you gotta get your facts right. Kirk Ferentz has actually recruited well at Iowa. Last year's recruiting class was #22 according to Scout.com. And Kirk Ferentz's philosophy has been a major positive for this recruiting. Since...

    Is Mc Call ready yet?

No way the Hawks don't make a bowl with six wins. The Big 10 has 8 bowl tie ins (Rose, Cap One, Outback, Gator, Insight, Meineke Car Care, TicketCity, and Little Caesar's). Minnesota and Indiana will not be bowling this year, and a 6-6 Iowa team makes it over a 6-6 Northwestern team for...

    In order to win ...

Does the offense really need to open it up that much tomorrow? I don't think so ... yes, I realize that our offense has been the cause of basically all of the Kirk Ferentz losses to NW. But in my opinion, last year' s loss came about because Stanzi tried to open it up and go for the long...
