I've also saw the reasoning behind that was that he brought 4 guys from D2 with him and that was part of the strategy to win because they were lacking in talent and athleticism. Sounds like DD is not the guy, so let's see if McCollum is it. I get a feeling we're not getting either.

Not really, some of his Drake teams were much faster paced. If you look at his HC years at each school, pace of play was all over the place. IMO, that is a mark of a good coach who game plans around the pieces he has.
