Yes but how long did those guys stick around? If I read correctly, ISU got decimated with transfers. As we know, ISU won 2 games this year, so it doesn't help much if you can't retain said talent.
Pretty much how I am seeing it. I hear so much that Iowa is a "developmental program" who has to rely on 4-year players to have success. Seems true. If even a lot of our 4-year guys aren't going to stay, then where the heck does that leave us if not constantly having to start over with...
IMO what Fran has gotten done here, even with nothing more than a 2nd round loss, is not a fireable offense. Am I satisfied with 2nd round losses every time we make the dance? No. I've said that before. As much as I HATE the "We're just Iowa" line, I also have to admit to myself that it's...
Very true. Just gotta be sure you hire the right guy. You also need to be sure not to hire Todd Lickliter instead of Brad Stevens (Iowa), or Dan Monson instead of Mark Few (Minnesota). Both Butler and Gonzaga had some success under Lick and Monson, but both programs really excelled once...
Agree with the previous posts that it's just too hard to predict next season until we know where the roster lands. Also depends on how big of contributors guys like Perkins, Ulis and Kris Murray can be next year, too. They are relative unknowns IMO until we see more of them in roles where they...
I love the guy. He's already pretty good, but add a bit more strength and if he can improve his shooting some, he'd be dynamite. Defensively, he's a lot like his old man. Very active, gets a lot of deflections, tips and steals.
I mainly just think the new guys coming in next year are inexperienced and that there's no way IMO that next year won't be a drop off. Two years from now? We'll see.
I've been watching Iowa basketball long enough (since the mid 1980's) to know that years after we lose a lot of production...
Exactly. Just having someone serviceable in there instead of nothing but a gaping hole where Garza used to be, would be nice. Obviously some others from elsewhere on the court will need to help pick up the slack for the production Garza left behind.
I'd rather everybody do it "the right way" but since that clearly is not a realistic wish, then all I can say is that as a fan, I wouldn't feel the least bit bad if we were doing it, too, along with so many others. For me, it's only basketball. No more, no less. We aren't talking about...
Not with the current mindset/approach, IMO. Need to find a way to upgrade the overall talent and level of athleticism in the program. The status quo will keep us where we've been for the past 30 or so years, which means getting a stiff neck from looking up at the realistic contenders.
Yep. No one gives a rip that the Fab 5's wins were vacated, or that Jerry Tarkanian was a shady recruiter at UNLV. Or Louisville, etc. We could list example after example. I never hear anyone say "Yeah, but they cheated so it doesn't count". It all still happened on the court.
Thought I...
When Iowa was looking for a new coach to replace Lickliter, I remember wanting Scott Drew as our next coach. I have no idea how true it was (maybe not at all), but I remember hearing a rumor at the time that he may have had some interest in the Iowa job.
A lot of us had a wish list, but Drew...
I'll always be a fan and I hope for the best, but I expect a sharp decline next year with all the departures, which makes it hard for me to be excited about the immediate future. The last couple years of building towards this year's team ended in a 2nd round loss (again), and now we're heading...
Unless I'm missing something, there has been ONE Covid withdrawal from the tournament. Naturally, it was the lower seeded team right next to us. Of course. Of freaking course. Not that it would have resulted in an upset, but it's uncanny how these things always work against us.
Yeah, I'm a...
^^^ All that said, Iowa is probably also in the Final Four if they get Houston's path. Double digit seed opponents all the way.
Iowa can't even get ONE upset to help them out, though, much less all the way through the entire region.
Right Way at Iowa equates to basically what we've gotten the past 3 decades. Our best teams in the past 30 years (going by NCAA tournament seed) are:
1992-93 (4 seed) - 2nd Round Loss
2005-06 (3 seed) - 1st Round Loss
2020-21 (2 seed) - 2nd Round Loss
Yeah, the 1993 team probably goes deeper...
