We need to get back to Uptempo Basketball

We haven't been a very good half court offense throughout Fran's time at Iowa, but we have been a very good offense when we run uptempo. For some reason we have abandoned that this year for a full court press on defense. Granted teams have been playing full court press against us so it makes it hard to play uptempo, but after missed shots we need to find our outlet and GO. Don't tell me we can't do it with this group. We only lost Cartwright in terms of uptempo type player. If Gesell is as good as everyone says (I believe he is) than use him to push to ball up to make opponents play on their heels on Defense.

Pretty sure that Gesell is the only legitimate scorer on the team. He needs to play. I think Fran misjudged the foul trouble. MG will learn from this game. He wasn't always smart with the ball and was a hesitant shooter. Fran should have set him loose since nobody else either wanted to step - or had the ability to step up.

"Pretty sure Gesell is the only legitimate scorer on the team". Wow...brilliant statement. You are kidding. Right?

Marble can score, his problem is he not selfish enough. he needs to take 15 shots minimum every game
he was 2-2 from 3 and 2-10 from 2, shooting just 2 ft's, for 11 points after having 9 pts at halftime

Marble is in the same mold as Jake Kelly. Put the ball in their hands and they become a different kind of player. If you recall Jake's sophomore year, he was having an OK season at the 2 but nothing particularly memorable. He was forced into PG duties and his game took on a whole new dimension and he really blossomed in the second half of the season. We saw something similar with Marble last year. I'd like to see him directing the offense a little more and see if he can find that same rhythm again.

There is no doubt we are struggling scoring, but tempo wise our defense is actually a huge factor.
Our press actually slows the game more than speed it up: we force the team to work the ball up slowly down the court.
This isn't the Mr. Davis press where you are building huge runs and vice versa giving up lay ups quickly.
We've already forced more shot clock violations than all of last year. It's shocking, really, how improved we are at that end of the floor.
