Wayyyyyyy too early impressions

MB looked really out of sorts tonight. His offensive 'game' is a mere shadow of two years ago. His confidence looked pretty shot tonight.
Hate to say it, but we'll be fortunate to get any consistent offensive productivity from him this year.

It's definitely the Gesell/White/Marble show this year.

In his freshman year he was a 13 point and 7 board guy in 18 Big Ten games. Do you not think he can get back to that this year? Do you think that was a fluke an the real Basabe was what you saw last year? Because he was fairly consistent his freshmen year, I would say.

He got a lot more minutes as a freshman than he's going to get on this team. He averaged over 24 minutes per game as a freshman. I just don't see him getting those kind of minutes (not because he's worse, but the team is better), and to expect that high of production in fewer minutes just isn't reasonable. He also wasn't the focus of a defense's gameplan as much. Gatens was always priority one, but Basabe attracted more attention as a sophomore, too. He was better when he was still an unknown.

He has a big role for this team, and it doesn't always require him to score 15 points. He's an excellent fit as the sixth man, and he seems to be embracing that role (really looked like it started to happen at the end of last season).

What about Basabe's 2-3 shooting, 5 point, 6 board game in 15 minutes off the bench screams a lack of confidence? Especially on a night when literally EVERYBODY except for Marble, White, and May couldn't hit the broad side of a barn?

Basabe is just fine. He played a solid game tonight, hardly the first player I'd look at and say he's lacking confidence (Looking at Oglesby).

Neither Woodbury or Olesani seem to be foul prone. Last years big guys didn't seem to last very long in a lot of the games.

I don't think we had any 'bigs' that could really play last year. Brommer? Not that good. Archie? More of the same. Olesani? Too raw. Anybody else you MIGHT consider a 'big' played outside more often than not. (White/McCabe)

No .. our 'bigs' this year are just fine.

Ohh....how about his shots came from the inside where he was set up (i.e. he isn't setting up anything on his own)...his three turnovers (which lead the team), the fact he's gone from Coach's prize recruit, and a freshman starter with decent numbers, to a sixth/7th man with limited minutes, being replaced by two freshman? Either those freshman are all-world, or, as a junior, with two years under his belt, his game/confidence just isn't where it needs to be. Hell, Clemmons had more minutes. Olaseni had 14, as did May. The fact everyone else (sans MWM) shot coldly is irrelevant.

Doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

He was a mid major recruit headed to Siena who only ended up in the B10 because his coach happened to inherit this mess of a roster. This is what happens as you go from worst team in the B10 to mid level. We should be recruiting over guys who got lots of minutes on those bad teams. Basabe's freshman years were due to playing a lot of minutes and a lot of those minutes being garbage minutes.

Serious question...it's your opinion MB peaked during his freshman season because #1--our roster was so abysmal, and #2--he got to play lots of minutes because of inferior talent, and #3--the talent brought in this year, as freshman, are that much better than he is/was?

When has Basabe EVER created his own shot? Never. He was a garbage man as a freshman who started because the team was so short on talent. The team is much deeper now, so he doesn't start. Doesn't take a genius to do the math on that one.

But there has been absolutely NOTHING to suggest he's lost confidence, except that you're concerned he may have (which is based on nothing except that he's not starting anymore).

The fact that the backup point guard got more minutes than a backup power forward isn't relevant in the slightest.

Sure can't slip anything past you.

Pretty much but not just freshman this year, you need to include White taking a lot of his minutes as well. I still think he will be a part of the crunch time lineup we see most of the time against Big Ten teams.

the fact Iowa can go 10-11 deep affects everybodies minutes, Basabe and May are the 6th and 7th men on this team,
and if I recall people had already thrown May under the bus as a non contributor for this year

And if I recall correctly, somebody had Olaseni down for 8-10 PPG and 8-10 RPG last year as a true freshman.
