Iowa State This Year

So I was getting $hit from co-workers today who were ISU fans about how we lost to them in football so I came back with at least Iowa will win in basketball this year. I got a scoff and so I said that Iowa is going to be good this year. The response I got was "So is ISU." I get the feeling ISU fans still thinks were in the Lickliter years. My question is, is ISU going to be good? I didn't think they were going to be because they lost Royce White, Scott Christopherson, and Chris Allen. Those three guys are their top 3 scorers from last year.

I think it will be a great game. I definitely don't think Iowa is still in the Lick era... I expect to see a much improved team this year.

I think many Iowa fans may be underestimating ISU. Sure, we lost a ton of scoring, but we will be a much better defensive team. Will Clyburn is going to be very good, and we will actually have a PG this year. Before you all say that Lucious sucks, I will say that he won't have to be great, just good, since we return a good nucleus and he won't need to score much.

You guys have a couple of good freshmen coming in, and we have one that should contribute... Georges Niang. He will be a great Cyclone when his career is done.

The Cyclone Achilles heel will be post defense and rebounding. If that is good, the team should have a good chance to return to the NCAAs.

I am glad both of the big in-state teams seem to be going in the right direction.

I definitely give the nod to Iowa since it's in Carver-Hawkeye this year. I honestly think both teams will be pretty even, although ISU has an experience edge. I also think ISU has a significantly tougher schedule prior to the game, so they may be a little more battle tested.

ISU being solid this year depends on a lot of things - Babb having a bounce-back offensive year, Booker not fouling every play, Gibson playing a little defense, and Niang/Lucious/Clyburn being as good as advertised. Both teams have question marks, some of which will start getting answered here in a few weeks.

It will be ISU's first road game. Iowa will have been @VT.

It will be interesting seeing a freshman PG go against a senior PG. Gesell is good, but we will have to see if he can stay in front of Lucious.

You boys over yonder in Ames got anyone coming in that was as good as Scotty C at hitting those threes?

Hopefully Babb will regain the shooting stroke he had early in the year, and Tyrus McGee can really shoot it. Clyburn can shoot it well from the outside.

The year after next is when Scotty2.0 arrives. Matt Thomas is probably one of the top 2 shooters in HS right now. Probably not as much of a thug as Scotty though. ;-)

Losing White will be difficult enough considering he led them in pts, rb, ast, bl...................
But Christopherson and Allen too?
IA v ISU will be tough just because of in-state rivalry, but ISU won't come close to their record of last year overall.

I also find it hard to believe that you can lose a 1st rd draft pick, your best 3pt shooter, and Allen and expect to replace that. Sure they got some players to replace them, but I can't see them matching their production.

No one thought White and Allen were gonna do anything except implode last year, too. Clyburn is probably the best player on either team. It's going to be an interesting season for both teams.

Best case scenario: Clyburn is an All B12 type player, Luscious proves to be a more than capable starting pg, ISU's outside shooting is good enough to overcome their lack of size and they finish 3rd in the B12

Worst case: Clyburn proves to be just another B12 wing, Luscious and Babb never find their shooting stroke, ISU struggles to score inside and rebound and finishes in the 7-8 range in the B12.

I realize that losing the top 3 scorers is tough, but those three were also very poor defensively. Clyburn is a very good scorer, and Ejim will step up his scoring. Like Iowa, we have good depth, and can run and press more than last year.

It may not gel, as you never know how it will all come together. But there is a lot of talent on the roster, and Hoiberg proved last year he knows how to pull the right strings.

I missed the whole thug Scotty thing. Why do we call him a thug? When I see a skinny white kid thug is not the first word the comes to mind???

A little advice. Don't let em draw you in.

"Wise men never argue with fools, because people from a distance can't tell who is who.

If they press you, just know you have "scoreboard". Not from one game...or one year... But "scoreboard" over a lifetime or two...or three...on many, many levels. Be it athletics, academic prestige, fiscal health, global significance, or whatever. That's why they go so apesh*t over any one game. It's all they have.

You can measure by most any metric you like...IOWA always comes out on top. ISU will always be ISU...and never be "IOWA". And they all know it. That's why they behave as they do.

Weather the shallow and finite taunts, my friend. History is on your side.

It is a very tongue-in-cheek reference to when he hit a dagger of a three against Iowa, made what some thought was a throat slashing gesture, and some Iowa fans labeled him a thug. He is the furthest thing from that, as you noted.

It also went along with the "thug" transfer theme, which was mostly misplaced, but a common pejorative narrative last year here on HN.

The talent gap from last year has been significantly impacted. Iowa has added depth and talent, but youth and inexperience are still factors. ISU did lose much of its scoring, but has an excellent nucleus of players to work with. Inexperience is a factor for ISU as well.

I expect this years game will be an up and down the floor game with a lot of 3/4 or 1/2 court pressing by Iowa. I have no prediction for the outcome.

Mark my words, we will win by 30 this year in BBall. Franny is wonderful. At Carver. ISU lost all their good players from last year. It will an embarrassment for them.

Why is everyone saying Iowa is very inexperince. Yes we will be using some freshmen tallent, but Iowa is returning what 87% of their offense. I would not call that inexperinced by any means.

Playing a freshmen PG is very nerve racking. Who knows how he will do when the lights come on, but it sounds like hes going to be able to handle it. I mean look at White you would have never guessed that guy was a freshman by the end of the year!
