Olympic Weightlifting ...USA??

Seems all the "stans" and Asian countries dominate the sport of weightling, both men and women. Why do you think it is that the USA sucks at this sport?

It's a number of things. First off in other countries it's been ingrained in their cultures since the days of the Anglo-saxons and the Greeks. They are also farmed very early and built specifically for competing in the Olympics. If you look at the United States, if we have a superior athlete they usually compete in one of the main sports like football, baseball, or basketball. Other countries love their weightlifters and put them on a pedestal instead of those other sports.

Also, when was the last time you stepped into a regular gym and saw bumper weights or platforms for Olympic style lifting?

Lastly, the drug testing. The United States athletes are checked for drugs year round. In other countries they stop when it's time to compete.

I actually heard a story on this on NPR a week or so before the start of the Olympics. They highlighted a lot of the same stuff Sparky mentions in his first paragraph - i.e. in some of these cultures/countries, weightlifters garner a lot of glory (in the US, they would fade into history the day the Olympics were over) - thus, US athletes with Olympic caliber sized frames/strength/etc are more than likely playing OL/DL somewhere.

Another thing cited in the story was that many of these countries have state-run programs (of which no equivalent exists in the 'States) to prop up some of these off the beaten path sports - like weightlifting, for instance.

similar as to why we arent as good in men's soccer. we dont have our best athletes doing it where other countries do.

Same reason the US doesn't pump out good heavy weight boxers any more. A lot of money to be made playing some other sport w/o getting your head bashed in (as much).

Also, the US has fallen behind in the "tallest in the world" rankings, something to do with the crap we eat. I think it was a European country that over took the US.

we dont do good in soccar because its a game for 8 year old girls, commies, and poor people who cant affort real sports equipment

I wish NASSCAR was an olympic event. We'd show 'em then.
USA. USA. usa.

Not to mention, why would anyone want to do weight lifting?

Lifting heavy objects just for the sake of doing it seems like a horrible idea to me.

All wrong answers (someone might have mentioned it though). $$$$$$$$ and a little bit of talent with some intelligence level thrown in.

What's the most cro-magnon olympic sport? Weight lifting (followed closely by wrastlin').

Because USA weightlifters are doing it wrong...
