All that really matters, though, is performance on the court. As quickly as Iowa fans have fallen in love with the future – which is quickly becoming the present – of Hawkeyes men’s basketball, they’ll turn their backs given too many more losses to Campbell or Nebraska or, Herky forbid, Iowa State.

As one of the first examiners of on-the-court prospects, Jarryd Cole can vouch for the direction of Iowa hoops.

“I would say it’s for real,â€￾ said Cole, the Hawkeye forward-turned-Europe-pro who was the proverbial patriarch of this year’s Prime Time leaguers.

“When you put the roster together, we’ve got 7-footers, (height) all the way down the line. We have the athleticism to compete with anybody in the country. The sky’s the limit for these guys.â€￾

I've said ever since the Purdue win in 2011 that I'll remember Cole and Gatens as the guys who laid the foundation for everything Fran accomplishes in Iowa City. Without those two, I'm not sure things ever get started.

When he decides his playing career is over. I think he'll make a great coach.

Jarryd Cole will always have a special place in my Hawkeye heart. He could have bailed but showed great loyalty to the Hawks during the tough times. When he's done playing, I would love to see him occupy a role on Fran's staff.

That Purdue game was one of first games I went to in several years. I have been to a few hundred Iowa games, and that game was one of the best games I have ever experience at an Iowa game. The fans cheering Jarryd Cole, Jarryd Cole... It was awesome. That was the best send off a senior could have had.
After the game, we were saying Fran is going to get it done. Cole & Gatens were that beginning. This year the Hawkeyes will surprise many, and we will become "known".
