What Should Happen to Penn State?

In all these different threads I see arguments going back and forth on what the Big Ten/NCAA can or cannot do. The entire situation at Penn State circles around an institution and people in positions of authority failing to do the right thing. Now is your chance to decide what is the right thing to do, the appropriate punishment to help avoid something like this ever happening again. What should happen to Penn State whether it is the Department of Education stepping in, NCAA, or Big Ten. I do not want to see a wall of text telling us the rules of the NCAA or what "probably" will happen. You make the call, tell us what you think is the appropriate punishment for Penn State.

IMO the NCAA may not be the biggest threat to Penn State, I think it is the Department of Education. If there were ever grounds to take away an institutions accreditation I would think failing to report sexual child abuse for 14 years and covering it up would do the trick. If Penn State was to lose its accreditation that would be the death penalty for Penn State that goes way beyond it's athletic department.

What I think should happen is as mentioned above Penn State losses accreditation for a period of time, the NCAA gives the football program the death penalty, and the Big Ten removes Penn State from the conference.

So in your opinion what should happen to Penn State?

That's a really tough question to answer but I'll give it a shot.

Each individual that was involved in the cover up can burn for all I care. They may not be as bad as Sandusky but they're just a **** hair lower. Their inaction allowed the molestation of countless children there's no way around that. What they did caused children to be raped.

2 year death penalty for the football program. It's pretty obvious the football program was at the heart of this and should feel the brunt of the pain (aside from the individuals)

The University is obviously going to feel a lot of pain from the impending lawsuits which will serve as a pretty large punishment. Not exactly sure what the Department of Education does for PSU so It's tough for me to come up with a punishment from that side of things.

As much as I don't want a team the caliber of PSU (before the incident) kicked out of the Big Ten I think it might be necessary.

- Remove Penn State from the Big 10.

- Maximum NCAA sanctions on at least the football program.

The attached SI article does a good job of saying what the rest of the colleges must do.

If anything positive can come of the Penn State scandal, it's this: Hopefully every coach, athletic director, president and administrator in the country read every page of Thursday's report and absorbed the horror of their counterparts' mistakes. Hopefully they paid particular attention to the group's 120 recommendations to avoid future such occurrences, some of which are unique to Penn State, but most of which would serve any university well.

Hopefully -- because we have little choice but to trust that in times of crisis, when our cherished universities have to make tough choices that could harm a popular sports team, the leaders will do the right thing. I, for one, am no longer naïve enough to believe they always will.

Strip Joe of any victories after 1998. His name needs to go from the record books.

The Dept of Ed does not perform accreditation. Independent accrediting bodies do. There are accrediting bodies like the Higher Learning Commission that cover the entire institution and then discipline specific bodies that accredit colleges, departments, and programs. So the whole Dept of Ed thing doesn't really apply.

Basically PSU needs to lose visibility for a couple of years. This means no TV or bowls or conference revenue from both. Then players need to get the USC rule, which lets them transfer or opt out of their LOC without penalty.

Perhaps I misread what the Deptartment of Ed can do. They can take away their ability to receive federal financial aid, which would be a death sentence.

While, "technically" you are correct. The reality is the DOE most certainly would influence accreditation.
Here's a copy & paste from the DOE website:
The U.S. Department of Education does not accredit educational institutions and/or programs. However, the Secretary of Education is required by law to publish a list
of nationally recognized accrediting agencies that the Secretary determines to be reliable authorities as to the quality of education or training provided by the
institutions of higher education and the higher education programs they accredit.

Without accreditation, much of that endowment money goes bye-bye. And all the good researchers/professors along with it.

The DOE pulling accreditation is the equivalent of the death penalty for the entire university.

1)The B1G should remove PSU. That should happen right now, today.
2)The NCAA should envoke the death penalty on the fball program for a term of 14 yrs.
3)The DOE should at a minimum fine & set guidelines for continued accreditation.
4)The legal system should swallow every single person that knew anything about these crimes and did nothing. And there weren't only 5 people. Many many more people knew of this.

Removing PSU from BIG hadn't crossed my mind. That would be interesting if thats even suggested and debated by the higher ups. It might be a good idea. The domino affect of this will be unprecedented. Sponsors are not going to want to touch PSU so that'll affect ratings and what bowl games will accept em. It's a mess and if the BIG doesn't want the stink on their hands.... The more I think about it removing them from the conference might be a great idea

Point #4: HOW many people knew? Does the report say? (No, ,I have no intention of reading the whole report, I have enough going on without having to worry about 267 pages of "whereas" and "inasmuch as"). And how will they prove exactly which people knew?

I am not in favor of the death penalty, but if B1G presidents vote to boot them, I am good with that.

The fact that Joe Pa still has a statue standing near the stadium today is grounds to kick those ruhtards out of the Big 10. Good riddance you sick slimmy bastards.

You don't quite understand what you cut and pasted. The DOE publishes a list of proper accrediting bodies, not institutions. For instance, their list would include HLC, or the Higher Learning Commission, not PSU or any other college. PSU is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is included on the DOE list.

Believe me, I have been on the accrediting task force for 2 different universities.

This is why I suggest a 2 year TV and bowl ban and no conference revenue sharing.

After they have been invisible for two years, they can show what they have done to change the culture and ask to have their bowl eligibility, TV rights and revenue sharing reinstated. (But, the players and recruits would have to be granted the USC rule.)

The "Death Penalty" also known as the repeat offenders rule can not happen because the NCAA hasn't sanctioned them for anything yet. The NCAA needs to sanction them for harboring a petterass first. Then if PSU harbors another petterass, then they can give ‘em the death penalty.

Two things that need to happen. They need to bulldoze that shower room to the ground and remove the Paterno Statue.

Excellent point on the death penalty aspect. NCAA really CAN'T give it to them at this point.

I am starting to think maybe B1G DOES need to kick them out.

Why are so many people hell-bent on destroying PSU? How would you feel if some slimeballs did this at UofI? We love Uof I, and would about die if our beloved institution were being dragged through the mud like this. Let the state of Pennsylvania go after the people who committed the crimes (including cover-up of course), and go after them hard. Together, the Big 10 and PSU should remove all football wins since 1998, put the program on some form of probation. and give tons of money toward aid to the victims.

I have no idea how many knew, report didn't address that, but it sure as hell was more than the 5.

You are entitled to your opinion on the death penalty. We are in agreement on the B1G booting them. The sooner the better IMO.

The CEO is responsible for the company, in this case even though the CEO died in Jan, does not mean the company should not be punished.

No TV appearances for 3 years, remove 10 scholarships per year for 3 years, no off campus recruiting during that time, no bowl appearances.
It will not kill the program, but it will bloody its nose pretty severely.

The civil cases will take care of this.

How do you deter or prevent something like this from ever happening again if you don't drop the hammer? I say let all the kids transfer with no strings. Incoming recruits the whole 9 yards. But B1G should cut their strings with PSU they need to start from scratch in 2 years and when they come back. No TV alliances No conference backing for 3 more years. The school shouldn't be able to profit from football for awhile is how I look at it.

Read my original post, there are plenty of threads that discuss what can or cannot happen with plenty of debates on the issues. What I am asking is what do you think should happen to Penn State?
