Husker Writer: Delany uses Rose Bowl as crutch

Who cares whether the Rose Bowl is still the 'main event'? As others have said or implied, Big Ten schools aren't out there sandbagging on the recruiting trail or in the weight room because they don't want a national championship.

Going to the Rose Bowl is still the end of a great season and is worthy of excitement and celebration. Wisconsin vs. Oregon was a great game last year. It may not have 'meant' as much as the NCG, but who really cares? Everybody's 0-0 again come September, and pretty much everybody in the top 20 who won their bowl went into the offseason on a high note. Did anybody here without money on the game REALLY care about the NCG last year?

Who set up talking about winning a conference championship going to the Rose Bowl and wanting to play in a NC game as being mutually exclusive?

Nobody said it, but it seems like Delany would rather have teh Big 10 in teh Rose Bowl than set up a playoff to determine a champion. No other conference commissioner, including Larry Scott of le PAC 12, has such a hard on for a single bowl game. A game, I might add, will only be further marginalized when a playoff takes place.

The BCS killed teh Rose Bowl, a sorry-*** 9-3 Illinois team put an extra bullet in it just to be sure, and TCU beating UW buried it in a shallow grave. Way to be so loyal to that thing that is on after le parade.

It's not the Granddaddy any more. I'll go further, it is horrible for us. I'd speculate a B1G/Pac12 game doesn't have much TV draw for most of the country, and hasn't for a long time.

However, I doubt any BT team, with a legitimate shot, starts the year saying, "I hope we lose at least 1 game this year, but win the conference, so we can go to the Rose Bowl". The whole premise of his article is wrong.
Pretty much sums it up.

You just contradicted yourself. The B10/P12 footprint pretty much covers a lot of the largest tv markets in the country.

The Big Ten tried hard for many years to kill the Rose Bowl with its performances, it didn't start with Illinois. But one's reference point has to go back past 2007. Things may change, as they often do, but that loyalty served Big Ten schools quite well over the years.

You just contradicted yourself. The B10/P12 footprint pretty much covers a lot of the largest tv markets in the country.

Surprising they're about 2nd in viewership on an annual basis. Historically no where near second, and the trend seems to hold steady.

To really get the picture, you'd have to get total viewership by the time slot, and then compare the west coast start time, to an east coast start time.

Is it the only game on at the time?

In any event, I'm not sure I contradicted myself. The B1G has more tv sets than any other conference in America, or at least it did before the new conference realignment that hasn't been tested yet, but this doesn't necessarily translate into more viewership.

Delany's responsibility is to make the conference money, period. Right now he does not see the B1G making more money in a playoff system if the B1G is not involved every year. Let's face it, the conference is not strong enough right now to be assured a B1G school is one of the top 4 schools every year. The other major conferences do not care as they stand to make more money in this playoff scenario, including the Pac12 who has USC, Oregon, and Stanford usually in the top 4.

Yes, but he was supporting the BCS bowls like the Rose being like a semi final game. He is trying to control it to ensure the B1G is involved every year, which he should.

He has done well for the B1G. Very well. His being proactive here is just another indicator of the inevitable.

Who set up talking about winning a conference championship going to the Rose Bowl and wanting to play in a NC game as being mutually exclusive? Other than this writer, and now, maybe you. Don't confuse the benefits and virtue of tradition with being stuck in the past. If a BT team can't play for the NC, then playing in the Rose Bowl is a nice alternative. There's nothing wrong with admitting that. However, I doubt any BT team, with a legitimate shot, starts the year saying, "I hope we lose at least 1 game this year, but win the conference, so we can go to the Rose Bowl". The whole premise of his article is wrong.

Well said.

Curious why you feel this way?

I won't speak for DT, but a playoff worries me because, generally speaking, they devalue the regular season. Also, one-off games tend to introduce a higher level of randomness than if you had a championship determined by a larger sample.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not full-out against them - but they're not the perfect mechanisms people often assume they are. They are one imperfect way to determine a champion among many different imperfect ways.
