New Gable article - on why he left clownville...



I attended the Iowa Athletic Trainers banquet a few years ago where Gable was their guest speaker. He told the story that athletic tape helped make his decision to come to Iowa. Kind of interesting to now hear the rest of the story.
 


i found it also interesting that a head coach of 1 year would actively recruit his replacement. that seems a bit odd - any one know the rest of the story on that?
 


There are two big reasons that Iowa got Gable. One was Nichols really did not want Gable around since he had no intention of leaving the ISU head coaching job to Gable for many years. Gable would have been big competition for Nichols. Look what happened to Bobby Douglas.. The second reason was a small time booster named Roy Carver. Just kidding about the "small time". Roy paid big bucks for Iowa to get Gable there. Similar to the PSU situation with Cael. The tape is an interesting story, but not that important to the "rest of the story".

can you fill in the blanks about Kirdlemeyer (obvious sp). ??

why would a coach in his 1st year actively recruit his replacement?
