Critical need for next year...big or scorer?

Until today's game I was convinced we needed a scoring 3 for next season. After watching Green, Payne and Nix have their way down low, I wonder if McCaffrey is looking at any rent-a-post juco players. McCabe and White play their tails off, but both give up too much size / weight down low. We have Woodbury and Meyer coming in, but they are all tall, thin, lanky guys that don't have big ten bodies. Red shirt somebody (Meyer or Olaseni) and get a bigger body in for 2 years.

MSU must have shot about 90% when the ball went inside and if they missed, they got the rebound.

I think Marble and White will turn into scorers. Iowa needs a big to fill the lane and grab rebounds. That also will help open up the 3.

Woodbury and Meyer and maybe Olesani will take up more space and make entry passes tougher with their wingspan.

And having them in the game moves White and McCabe back to the wings which gives up better defense there and better offensive flow.

The short answer, they need both. Not really option, but they really could use both.

The number of teams in the entire country that have the quality of bigs that Michigan State does is one- Michigan State.

MSU has talented bigs, but we also make them look like NBA lottery picks. It hasn't been exclusively MSU caliber teams that have owned us down low and on the boards....see Campebell Camels. I remember Cy Tate and Reggie Evans posing problems for MSU because they were strong dudes who could bang. We get out-muscled for at leat 5 boards per game.

What we need is someone who can finish at the rim. Our lowest percentage shot today was probably within five feet of the basket. I know Michigan State's bigs are ridiculous, but it's been a problem all year. We either need to bring in someone with a wider body or just get our skinnier guys to be a little better at finishing and/or drawing fouls.

maybe you should give Fran a call and tell him he screwed the pooch by getting Woodbury and Meyer and not the next Tractor Traylor,
again you are the one that screws the pooch, bigs may have the weight but they lack height with the tallest MSU player being 6'9 as a heavyweight. the listed center for MSU is a 6'10 "230 lb'r", Woodbury at 7'1 245 lbs as a HS senior is not small or light, he will have a 4 inch height advantage over the musclemen , and 3 inches on their tallest player

a hs senior at 240 isnt the same body as a college jr at 230. the 230 on the college jr will be ripped with muscle and the 240 on the hs senior wont be as strong. look at the muscle definition on these posts not their actual weight. white isnt giving up a lot of weight but he doesnt have the muscle yet.

that being said i dont think fran wants big bruisers. i think he wants a more slight functional team. so then those kids need to know how to use the body they have correctly to make up for being 10 lbs lighter. it is possible. it isnt about weight but rather understanding of the physicality of post play and how to use your body correctly to give you the advantage whether you are bigger or not. most young kids dont know this (white is still learning but knows better than most frosh). this is why posts tend to develop slower.

We need what every team needs. A guy who can handle the ball, create his own shot and get to the rim. They aren't easy to find. Marble has a chance.

I like the 4s and 5s on next year's roster.

In addition, 245 on a 7'1" player is not the same as 230 on a 6'9" player. While we don't want Woodbury to gain much weight (see Meyers conditioning problems on Thursday), he should hopefully add muscle and cut fat.

so who is this miracle player that will lead to a undefeated season and a NT, let alone this player that can do all these miraculous plays we suppossedley need, without giving the 5 new comers a chance nor the returning players to develope further, Zeller came in as a 225 lb player as a freshmen , now i suppose you are going to tell me Zeller had a much better weight and conditioning program than Woodbury has at his school.
lets see how Woodbury and Gesell perform before throwing them into the trash heap of not being able to compete in the BT, if Woodbury was good enough for Roy WIlliams of UNC i feel is good enough to compete in the BT

i will tell you zeller got pushed around at ate up by some teams that played physical. but zeller has an added bonus of being taught the ropes by his brothers who. woodbury isnt the athlete zeller is. zeller is a freak like the kid at kentucky. woodbury will more likely follow the leonard path except he will be expected to play more as a frosh so his numbers will be better.

We play MSU once next year, in Carver. They will have Nix,Payne and Dawson...a very talented phyiscal frontcourt. But, we only play them once, and it is at home. Not about to go out and add yet another big to the roster for that one game. Hey, I do not expect to go undefeated in the Big Ten next year,do you?
We will just have to make do with Mel,White,McCabe,Gabe,Woody, and Meyer to fill those two posiitons for 40 minutes. That is 6 guys. They can each play 14 minutes, then go take a sauna,if Nix has crushed them.

No, we need an athletic scoring wing, who can defend on the perimeter.
MSU is the aberration in the league next year. We have enough physicality to compete with the rest.
