for those complaining about quickness

it is passing that beats any speed a team has, there have been many times that side to side passing gets a man open for open looks, in BB practices the main drill is passing, this down pushing the ball up the court, there are drills where 3 player push the ball with the ball never once touching the floor, good precise passing beats speed anyday,
watch the passing during a game and see how many time a good pass leads to a open look.
the thing is players have to learn how to anticpate and react accordingly, this is done by cheating on the passing lanes, Whites long arms give him a advantage in doing this

The advantage of quickness is you can put more pressure on the ball. You don't have to sag off players because you are afraid they might dribble drive by you. Playing closer to the ball handler accomplishes many things:

5 second calls
Chances to steal the ball
Causes double dribbles
Causes travels
Causes offensive fouls
Takes away passing lanes
Can lead to 2 on 1 fast break opportunities

If you watch a lot of college basketball you notice a lot of PG do not like to be pressured heavily. For example when UNI played VCU the only guard who could even dribble the ball under heavy pressure on UNI was the freshmen Deon Mitchell. Jordan Hulls from Indiana really hates to face in your face defense.

In college basketball you can really cause havoc by having a lot of quick, athletic, long defenders. There is a reason you don't see NBA teams press, because NBA guards are great ball handlers and it's hard to press great ball handlers. College basketball does not have a ton of great ball handlers so the more pressure you can apply the faster you can get guys to play and force turnovers.

I agree sagging back, and playing passing lanes is very effective defense but it is more preventative than attack based. I get the idea Fran wants to be more of an attack defense coach kind of like Missouri plays. Really quick guards who just push tempo and are in your face all game.

So quickness is NOT a bad thing.

but nobody is expecting White to play against a pg or sg, i don't see to many sf who have the ball in their hand all that much,
its a apples to oranges comparison, i was speaking of a SF on a SF, not a SF on a guard, and its more about matchups in putting people of equal or lesser skills. and White is quicker than most want to admit.

other than OSU and MSU, i have yet to see any of these greyhounds athletes or the Monster Centers some claim to be out there

white has been a dominant 4 all year. it is where he matches up best. he has the ability to be a normal pick and roll 4 along with a pick and pop 4 and can go 1 on 1 from the face up or wing with any 4. from the 4 spot on defense he excels at similar things as basabe (weakside shot blocking, rebounding). he would have 1 true advantage on the wing over a guard type and that is height. the kid is going to be all-conference frosh team at pf. probably get some consideration for the all frosh ncaa team (if they have a 2nd &/or honorable mention for it). with some (10-15 lbs) added muscle he will be able to truly post up 4s. and he can handle the weight as he seems to have no definition like he didnt know where the weight room was in hs. why move a guy to a position where he might struggle when you know he will dominate at the position he is at.

look at all but 2 posts we have next yr (white, mccabe, basabe, meyer) and they are tweeners with outside/inside game. basabe doesnt have the shot of the others but can develop a 12-15 fter he will be good. mccabe needs to work on his defense but he is an unexplosive version of white with added muscle. meyer has the most height but from videos and hearsay it sounds like he can shoot a little and can handle the ball almost a taller poor man's white. then aaron is the best of all: shoots as well as mccabe (maybe better), as explosive as basabe (basabe a little quicker but white is second in that), long like meyer (possibly still growing with the spurts he's had).

then if you watch the offense fran has a 3 guard (pg, sg, sf) system with 1 true post (c) and a combo post/wing (pf). it creates great mismatches that aaron has used well. the sf position is called that because of the fact that originally teams used 3 post players (this is how the unc triple post offense came about). but as the game has developed the sf has become a guard (almost more correct to call the sf a tg - tall guard instead). aaron is having a great year work on the things he needs (more consistent outside shot & a little bulk). if he can knock down more 3s that will be great as it will take pressure off marble, ogelsby and gesell to fill in for gatens next yr. also ogelsby starting i believe solidifies that white is a 4 and jo will start at the 2 next yr as gesell or clemmons will be at the pg because marble is better on the wing but has been forced to be a pg.

i have always been told if it aint broke dont fix it. and aaron white isnt broke as the starting 4. so why move him? he plays some at the 3 and he will next yr too but he is playing 80% of his minutes (if not more) at the 4. maybe we see that at 70% next yr with all the 4 & 5 types but that is it.

Because, as you recall, nobody said White was not quick enough for the Big 10, but that he was not quick enough for the NBA.

Pathetic effort Herb.

the only reason why JO started is because we have no true centerWhite McCabe and Basabe have rotated at the 4-5 spots out of necessity, next year i expect Woodbury and Olaseni to make JO starting obsolete, and put him to the role that Jeff Moe provided, and be a excellent energizer and instant 3 pts shooter off the bench and 6th man til Marble leaves.
Marble will play the sg as i expect him to imrove his shooting past the arc, and with his ability to handle the ball and penetrate makes him a good replacement for Gatens, and he will be a JR. he made a jump from 5.7 ppg to a 11.2 ppg from fr to so just .2 ppg away from a 100% increase. and based on him being the 2nd leading scorer will make him the potential leading scorer on the team.
White will start at SF as he provides size and ability at the 3 we lack, and returns as the 2nd leading scorer
I think Basabe will regain his starting spot at the PF spot has he will finally have a true center to take the pressure off him and he will go back to what he does best and that is the inside game and has range to 15', and is the 3rd leading scorer going into next season,
McCabe has major work to do in getting away from fouling, but has proved to be a very good 3 pt shooter as he is leading the team in % shooting of over 40%
Olaseni actually needed to RS this year, but the lack of Brommer and Archie stepping up their had to play in a rserve role in case of a major injury to any of the 3 in White, McCabe and Basabe, by playing the little he did can only benefit him and another summer and fall conditioning to put on about 15-20 lbs of playing weight should only help,
Woodbury should be able to contribute more than scrape minutes, and will give Olaseni somebudy to go up against in practice everyday, making both better
Meyer may be the RS canidate Fran has hinted at as he is only 215 lbs at 6'10 this wold allow the breaking up of the 5 or 6 man class it appears that Fran is offerring schollies to 2012 prospects.
Clemmons who is a true pt guard could make a run as the starting pg, he bring in some solid accolades, in being the #1 pg and the 3rd best player in the state of Michigan, this kid is no slouch no matter what the lack of stars imply.
Gesell is a 2 time Gatorade player of the Year player in Neb and will more than likely will receive the award for the 3rd year in a row, and will more than likely be named Mr. BB in Neb, so he is not chopped liver, but the practices will be heated and very competative between the 2 as both will be trying to earn the starting pg
Ingram is a solid defender who needs to work on a more consistant outside shot as he is a effective scorer from 15' in and like to finish at the rim, at the college level he needs to develope a shot past the arc
May wil be a SR and i hope provides the senior leadership by doing the little thing both in games and practice, if he comes in full of confidence and is healthy, he should do just that
now who of the current player that are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th leading scorers should sit to appease the Oglesby should start crowd
maybe the opportunity to start a true pg should be forgotten, or maybe the chance of having a true center for a change should be forgotten,
in the end there are just 5 players on the court, and having solid scoring options on the bench is a good thing, and in Oglesby, McCabe and May, provide just that

Be honest, has anyone read this?

gesell - pg
ogelsby - sg
marble - sf
white - pf
woodbury - c

mccabe coming off bench or woodbury if he isnt ready. basabe has found what works as a back up. no one will redshirt because gabe is a mop up man and meyer will play center over him. ingram and clemmons as back ups for gesell and jo. the fact that we are looking at that greene makes me think fran isnt sure how may will rebound and is looking for a back up to marble on the wing.

jo had a better skill set than gatens did coming out of hs. he just hasnt had the court time with gatens still here. he will be one of the top 4 scorers on the team next yr.
