Questions for all the Alford lovers?

Besides the lack of practice facility why did he fail? Why has Alford not proven himself in a big 6 conference? Why did his teams blow leads? Still waiting for Alford to take a team to the next level.

not a Alford lover but i do realize he had numerous shortcoming
the biggest was lack of experience or training to handle a upper level program
he never had to be a assistant coach, where he learned how to handle both the players and the public, he was made a HC before he was ready, he got players that worked at a lower level school on his name alone, therefore he never learned how to recruit at a upper level program,
the 2nd was in learning how to put together a staff, this was evident by his hiring Daddy and a couple buddies, he was able to pull in a couple players on his name and the Iowa kids, but he said from the beginning he was not going to beg or play the AAU game of recruiting, his feeling was Iowa was to ggod a program to beg players to come here, and even gave Mr. Davis credit for what he accomplished,
because of the HC tutaledge he should have gotten he did not know how to handle players, which evident in how the team imploded when Evans stayed for his senior season ,it was my opinion that it would have been better for that team if Evans had gone pro after his jr year, as i feel half the trouble in controling thing would not have been there with Evans gone, Recker would have made a very good senior leader and the younger guys would have responded to him better,
the next thing he was not prepared for was how to handle the public or Pearce situation, he thought giving the kid a 2nd chance was the right move, but to me Pearce stabbed him the back by not taking advantage of that chance.
was the 2nd chance a bad move in hindsight yes, but at the time it was not,
finally he was starting to get it, getting rid of daddy and a buddy and bringing in Neal was sign that he had learned from many mistakes,
there were to many times where when Steve started to get on the ref's for something ol daddy was quick to grab Steves coat tail and make him sit down like they were coaching HS where coaches are not allowed to stand.
as for recruiting if he had stayed he might of had a very good class, he had a 5* center committed, he also was in on Hummel, Moore, Gary and another player that ended up signing with Lute at Arizona, plus he had Freeman in the prior class and Smith, the Freeman committ was a big one has it finally got the door open in Chicago and he also got Peterson out of Dematha in Maryland, hindsight work pretty good in being able to see how players pan out, those are some strong recruiting area's.
it all boils down to the fact he was getting his on the job training at Iowa, where he learned alot how to coach and recruit at a BCS level school
we all saw how Lick treated Freeman and other Alford recruits, he even refuse to honor the centers committment by telling him wasn't needed, Hummel and Moore ended up at Purdue and did very well, would they have come to Iowa had Alford not left we will never know but the one thing we know for sure is that they didn't and was told to go look elsewhere and Gary followed Alford to NM, and most of the one on the roster left withinthe 1st year of Lick being here.
this is something the Alford haters won't even try to understand or admit

The cliffnotes answer: When Alford first got here our facilities were competitive and he was the golden boy, this allowed him to assemble some good talent early on without playing the AAU game. The team was solid, but not spectacular, the PP ordeal lost him good-will, the fanbase began to view him as a cocky. Through these things his "star" faded and facilities faded. He no longer was able to recruit the talent he got in his first couple of years. He didn't know how to play the AAU game yet either. He got lucky with Brunner, Horner, Haluska coming out of the state at the same time. This bought him some time, but the roster was still littered with Carlton Reeds, Ben Rands, Seth Gorneys, J.R. Angles, ect...

Toward the end of their final years he realized he couldn't get the talent he needed without getting dirty in the AAU game. He hired Noodles, somehow landed Tyler Smith, in what I presume was somehow shady. He made connections with Indiana Elite, he was learning his way around the shady AAU world. He decided to skip to New Mexico, brought Noodles with him and immediately made connections with Houston AAU clubs and has a steady pipeline of pretty good talent at New Mexico.

Why wasn't he successful? He couldn't get the players here. He's fixed that at New Mexico.
