In Big Ten, redshirts are golden

I've only posted the small part on Fran:

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery redshirted swingman Darius Stokes last year, but overall the Hawkeyes have had enough playing opportunities for freshmen in recent years.
"Typically I have not been a big redshirt guy. I've done it periodically, but some coaches are big believers," McCaffery said. "If you're on my team, I want you ready to play. In certain cases, physically, it makes a lot of sense."

I wish he would have had Olaseni redshirt this year. He would have benefited from a year to just sit, practice, and get another year to learn the game.

I believe he wanted to RS Gabe but he felt he would need to use him this year for depth.

I think that Brommers knee injury ended up costing Gabe a redshirt year....very unfortunate. I hope he plays some minutes in every game the rest of the way. He and Oglesby need to get minutes to prepare for next year. Another reason a tourny would be great...more games,more practices...good for Gabe and Josh.

Can we redshirt Gatens?

I actually thought about what would have happened if we had decided to shut down Gatens last year because of his wrist injury. We probably would have lost 3-4 more games last year but would have everybody back next year.

Obviously it is something Gatens probably would have never gone for as he just wants to play, but next years team with Gatens on it would have been Top 25 IMHO.

You are right. IF we somehow had Gatens back for another year.....no question we would be a NCAA tourney team and likely a top 25 team that could challenge for the conference crown.

idk guys nothing against Gatens but I think Iowa will be just fine without him next year. Call me crazy but I fully expect Oglesby to step out of Gatens shadow and be able to put up big numbers next season. I have seen his development come along nicely and by next season he will have had this experience along with a year of maturity. Plus you still have incoming freshman Gesell, Marble, along with the other recruits. The future is looking pretty dang bright.
