Barring a strong finish and miraculous run in the BTT, we will once again miss out on The Dance. And with that a chance to notch our first NCAA tourney win in 12 years.
Yes, that's what I said.....12 YEARS!!
As a lifelong Hawkeye fan (since the age of 10.....28 years ago), that is one tough pill to swallow. Until just yesterday when a buddy of mine that I went to the Indiana game with mentioned that, it didn't even dawn on me that it'd been that long. I have a son that turned 12 this week and I didn't even realize until just then that he has yet to experience a single Iowa victory in the NCAA tournament. That's a damn shame.
I remember growing up and Iowa's inclusion in the tournament was rarely if ever, in doubt. The discussion at the beginning of each year usually wasn't whether we'd make the tournament, but how high our seed might be. I remember selection Sundays.... I'd have my own homemade bracket ready to go (because there was no such thing as the Internet and I didn't want to wait for the next day to complete the bracket from the newspaper) and fill it out that same night.
Like most people on here, I got used to the idea of Iowa in the tournament to the point that I almost considered it a "birthright".....something that always happened. I, like most people, welcomed a change in coaching.....assuming that we would still always make the tournament, but that a change in coaching may bring us more tournament wins than just the first game (and, on occassion, the second game). How many on here could have honestly thought, after reaching the Sweet 16 in 1999, and nearly knocking off what would be the eventual National Champions (by the way, how many times was Iowa beat by an eventual National Champion?) that we would only see one more NCAA win in the next twelve years and be on our 3rd coach in that timeframe?
Well, here we sit, and that's our reality. 1 NCAA win in 12 years. Hopefully this year marks our last year of having to say that. I, for one, am tired of not caring about the Tournament!!
