Any chance we start 3 freshman next year?

Marble and Aaron White are the locks to start next year.

We have Gessell and Woody coming in who most are assuming will start as true freshman.

What are our options for the 5th starter?

Ogelsby- lacks athleticism which worries me more on the Defensive side
McCabe/Basabe- Is White fast enough to match at the 3 spot to move one of these guys to the 4 spot?

I've heard some people pretty high on Clemmons. Is there any chance that he would be ready to start as a true freshman as the 2 spot?

I dont think we start 3 freshman.

PG- Gesell
SG- Marble
SF- White
PF- McCabe/Basabe
C- Woodbury

Oglesby, May, Clemmons, Meyer will get some PT off the bench.

No idea whether Ingram, Gabe will get in the rotation at all.

I certainly hope we start 3 freshman next year, as that is the only hope for significant improvement. Outside of White and Marble, we have a host of role players returning next year.

Look how much Marble improved from last year to this year.

Look at the improvement McCabe made from last year to this year.

It is certainly very possible that Josh or someone else improves a lot and earns the starting spot. Maybe Basabe gets things going again and comes back better than he has ever been.

I think Fran is really good at developing players and I wouldn't write anyone off just yet.

Having said that... it is possible we end up starting 3 Freshmen next year. Who knows?! I'm really excited about the future though. I think we will do some great things!

And hopefully we can still do some great things for the remainder of this season!

Ingram will be in the rotation.

Gabe will need to put on some LBs, But I like his offensive moves, he just is not strong enough to finish.

I thought last night that I'm more excited for PTL games this summer than road games the rest of the year. That was bad basketball last night. We still have 3+ guys getting minutes who probably should not see the court. Go Hawks!

Gesell,Marble,White,Basabe,Woody is the probable lineup.
But, I do think that Fran will mix and match and play McCabe,Oglesby,May,Gabe, and some of the frosh plenty. Think IU this year, where they have had former starters like Verdell Jones and Pritchard come off the bench. Same with Michigan and Stu Douglas.

It is not all about starting, but it is all about building quality depth that gives Fran options depending on the opposition.

Meyer will get a lot of minutes at the 4-5 spots. Mel and Zack will lose significant minutes to Meyer. His basketball skills are better and he is taller/bigger.

After watching some footage of Ingram... I am convinced that he is going to be very useful. He looks extremely athletic and seems to have a great feel for the game and good vision. I had not seen any videos of him before and I must admit I don't know much about him, but I am excited.

I really think we are going to be a whole different team next year. Ingram and Clemmons will really help us out at the guard position. I wouldn't be surprised if May gets pushed out of the mix next year. May needs to really improve and excel at being a defensive specialist if he plans to get much playing time, because from what I can tell these freshmen are going to be much more productive on both sides of the ball.

And I do hope May improves. He seems like a good kid and I think he is athletically capable of doing much more than he is currently doing out there. Hopefully he can become a great role player and find a way to really help out the team. Right now it would be awesome for him to be a lock down defender.

May has been struggling with a back injury for awhile.
neithe McCabe nor Basabe have played the 3, they have been used mainly as a 4, which is where they shall stay,Gabe showed some good moves and had a solid block in the few minutes he played after a summer and fall of conditioning i expect him to gain the weight that will allow him to get solid minutes, all the freshmen will need time to adjust to the college game, May has been a 3 his entire career and i don't it to change his sr year, so i expect him to be the primary backup to White,
Clemmons is a true pg whereas Gesell was primarily a combo guard who has concentrated the last year and a half on being a point so the possibility of Clemmons and Gesell seeing time on the floor together is very a good possibility, Ingram is a very good defensive 2 and will probably be brought in from time to time to be a lock down defender on the hot shooter, depending on prepared Woodbury and Gabe are you cold see Meyer RS to beef up, from what i hear he is only 215 at 6'10, so he needs to bulk up, and that would seperate this big class and if they save 2 for next year that would give Fran 1 RS fr and 2 true freshman, and a solid rotation of 3,3,3 and 4 for scholarship rotation, this would all change if injuries or somebody does not step it up, like Basabe or McCabe as it sounds like Meyer is slotted for the 4

also Ingram is 6'3 and for matchups i would hope Fran would match him up agains PG and sg rather than use him against 6'7-6'8 sf, not that it can't be done but use him where he can do the most damage when you already have the players to matchup size wise, in this case a 6'7 player matches up with a 6'7 player and so on.

it really doesn't matter as this upcomig season, it will be the deepest and most talented class we have seen in years;
pg we have 2 in Gesell and Clemmons
sg/wg we have 3 in Marble, Oglesby and Ingram
sf we have White and May
pf we have Basabe, McCabe and Meyer
c we have Woodbury and Olaseni
thats 2 for every position and 2 extra to cover up for injuries and/or RS
so does it really matter who starts

I don't know what the starting lineup looks like, but there are a couple rotations that can cause matchup problems.

BIG:

PG: Marble
SG: White
SF: McCabe
PF: Basabe
C: Woodbury

or Small:

PG: Gassell
SG: Marble
SF: White
PF: McCabe
C: Basabe

Having seen Meyer play in person a couple of times, I cannot agree with you here. Yes, he is taller and more athletic, but I would say his basketball skills are behind McCabe's.

IMO, Iowa's biggest problem this year is that they cannot stop dribble penetration. For that reason, I really hope we do not see the above lineup, even for a short spell.

In these projected lineups, White is often placed at small forward. I'm not a big fan of this. I think he's most effective at power forward.

No chance this line up is used because of defense. White couldn't go man on a #2 and McCabe wouldn't man up with a #3.

Yes I think it is very possible 3 freshman could start.

Clemmons and Ingram are allot better than most on here seem to realize. They both have very good athleticism and are far superior defenders to anyone currently on this team.

To your question above, If Clemmons and Gessel are on the floor together Mike would play the two, I actually think we are going to see that look allot.

I think our main rotation 1-3 is going to be Marble and the 3 freshman with Ogelsby as the 4th player.

Agree, White can not guard most 3s at least not at this point.

By far the biggest problem this team has is perimeter defense, putting White at the 3 would make the problem worse not better.
