Re: Iowa Recruits List from Iowa SID

SPRING FOOTBALL
Iowa is expected to begin spring practice on Saturday, March 24. The date for the final open practice/scrimmage of the spring is not definite at this time. More details for that day will be available later, along with media opportunities with Coach Ferentz and players during the spring.

RECRUITING CLASS
Iowa’s recruiting class includes 24 student-athletes, including two who are enrolled in classes for the spring semester, and 22 current high school seniors. Iowa also signed 24 student-athletes a year ago. Iowa has not signed more than 24 student-athletes since February, 2008, when 26 student-athletes joined the program.

Here are some additional notes on the current class:
The newest Hawkeyes are from 12 different states, including Arizona (1), Florida (2), Illinois (5), Iowa (3), Michigan (3), Nebraska (1), Oklahoma (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (1), Tennessee (1), Texas (1) and West Virginia (1). In addition, two players hail from Ontario, Canada. Iowa has signed at least one student-athlete from Florida in 13 straight years, at least one from Illinois in 10 straight years and at least one from Ohio in nine straight years.

The class includes five defensive backs, four offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, three wide receivers, two quarterbacks, two running backs and two athletes, one linebacker and one kicker.

Twenty-one of the newest Hawkeyes were team captains for at least one season, 22 competed in additional sports and 16 earned academic honors during their prep careers.

Eighteen of the 24 student-athletes helped their prep teams advance to state playoffs, while five were on state championship teams. Those five include Jaleel Johnson, Ruben Lile and Laron Taylor, who each claimed one state title, and Nate Meier, who played on Iowa’s eight-man state title team. In addition, Anthony Gair helped his prep team win two straight state championships.

Four of the newest Hawkeyes were selected to compete in national all-star games.

RB Barkley Hill (Iowa) and DL Drew Ott (Nebraska) were named state Gatorade Players of the Year, while athlete Nate Meier was named Player of the Year among Iowa’s eight-man football teams.
