Interesting Big Ten stats thus far...

I realize how early it is in the season but here are some tidbits of what i saw.

Iowa is 11th in rushing. Also 22 yards is the hawkeyes longest rush which is good for last in the conference.

Iowa is first in receiving yards with McNutt and Davis both in the top 5.

The top three rushers in the conference are all quarterbacks. Who can name the 3 Qb's the quickest? 2 are obvious.

That to me is amazing.

Well atleast Mcnutt owns the longest reception thus far with a 88 yarder to the house!

Also Morris and Prater have 2 of the top 5 longest int returns. 52 and 89. Iowa seems to do well returning picks. To bad both of Hydes picks involved diving to get them. Oh well the last one pretty much sealed the deal!

Which is all the more reason to unleash Vandy early in the game to help set up the run.

The more striking stats, in my eyes, are the following:

Scoring D: Iowa ranked 11th in B10 (26 ppg) - amusingly, Nebby is ranked 10th (24.7 ppg). Both units have been showing improvement though.

Total D: Iowa ranked 11th in B10 (397 ypg) - Nebby is ranked 8th (365 ypg)

Kickoff coverage: Iowa ranked 11th in B10

Opponent's 1st Downs: Iowa ranked 11th in B10

Opponent's 3rd-Down Conv: Iowa ranked 12th in B10

A positive surprise:

Punting: Iowa ranked 1st in B10 (42.4 yard net)

The D has a long ways to go ... however, at least I suspect that we'll be observing continued improvement throughout the season.

The D does have a long way to go but that scoring D is a little skewed because of a triple OT game.

If you just use what ISU scored in regulation the average goes down to 19.3 points a game.

I'm not sure where the scoring offense ranks, but even using just regulation against ISU, Iowa is still at a respectable 29.66 a game, which will win a lot of games, with the ISU game it is 35.33.

And the 22 yard run was by a guy who is likely out for the season.

Coker's long is 18 yards, on 69 carries.

This week will go a long way in determining how much the defense is improving. This is a team that will present some challenges, so if we shut them down and don't give up the big plays via blown coverages, I think we are on our way to having a good defense. We still need to get more pressure on the QB, but at least if the secondary gels, we are going to be much more difficult to score on quickly via the big play.

The other positive regarding the Pitt game, is that I believe they do have a serious running game, despite the competition they had played prior to Iowa. If you look at their OL, it was easily the biggest and most physical group Iowa has faced and it measures up physically to Big Ten OL's. They were some big boys and spreading things out gives them some advantages. The other factor is that Graham is legitimate at RB and we kept him under 100.

This is a very interesting week for our defense. I'm looking forward to seeing how they come out...I think they may have developed a little more confidence last week.

Those rushing stats are a massive fail for an offense that is supposed to be predicated on establishing the run.

So bottom of the BIG in a number of D statistics....bottom in rushing.... but at the top for receiving? Not typical iowa for sure but I think (although it is very very early) they are somewhat telling. I think our pass definetly opens up the run this year and not vice versa (or is it vica versa?). Let JVB throw it...see what happens
