Not sure how much longer he will be on. Marty asking a few tougher questions and Kirk was a little more candid than usual. Kirk said the Minny loss hurt worse than Wiscy or tOSU because he truly believed Iowa was a better team and Minny was limping into the game. Weird to hear the captain actually put the coach speak away for a sec and say what he felt.
 


Didn't hear it, but gotta say that I'm pretty shocked that Marty was even able to get an interview with Kirk.
 


Can't blame him for that. The Minny game was pathetic and there's no excuse for losing that game.
 


Marty asked him about JVB and if making him kneel at the end of the 09 tOSU game was a vote of no confidence in him. Kirk disagreed and said he felt he had a better chance of winning with each team starting at the 25. Marty also just told Kirk he guaranteed that Kirk will be the next coach of the Pats when Belicek retires. Kirk shrugged it off.
 






Yes, there was no way a poor Minnesota team should have beat Iowa last year. No ifs, ands or buts. Iowa was the far superior team. Minnesota was a team with an interim coach and poor play on the field.
 


Minnesota also had something to play for - the pig. None of the seniors on that team had ever won a trophy game, and it showed that day.

Agreed...the Minny game last year was the most uninspired/disappointing game since the infamous Western Michigan "fat cat" game of a few years back. Have a feeling Kirk would categorize both games similarly.

That said, I thought the interview was interesting. I listen to Marty casually on the drive home from work and was shocked to hear the good captain taking questions. Marty kept him on his toes, and the end was even kind of funny with Kirk recommending the "Pleasure Palace" in PA.
 


Yes, the MN loss was extremely disappointing. But then Iowa went back to work, circled the wagons, and beat a very good #12 Missouri team that earlier in the year had defeated #1 Oklahoma. I think the Missouri win showed once again what an outstanding coach Kirk Ferentz really is.....:)

Not that it's important, but just to get the facts straight. The fat cat game was Northwestern 2006, not Western Michigan 2007.

He should be sick over that MINN loss. KF failed to motivate his team to match the energy level that MINN played with.
That loss is all on the head coach. It took all of 5 minutes to see the difference in intensity level, between the 2 teams. KF wasnt able to pull the team together and get them to match MINN.
That was pathetic.

Well with all due respect that's only happened about 2 million others times in various sporting events and wars...throughout time. So I'm going to go ahead and place some of that blame on the guys who actually play!

Go ahead. If the players arent playing as hard as the guys on the other team, who's job is it to pull them off the field and send someone else in?
Sometimes, thats what a HC has to do, to get his point across. Did KF do that?
If I'm going to lose a football game, it wont be from lack of effort. If my #1's arent matching the effort and intensity of the other team, I will sit them down and lose with my #2s.
Either way, its still a loss. But at least I wont have to watch a pathetic effort.

Ok I will, fortunately for me I have some real life perspective of trying lead men and keep them motivated, it’s a real chore. In fact it can be quite a grind day after day, so I’m going to go ahead and give KF the benefit of the doubt. If he’s like me he is already being pretty hard on himself. He doesn’t need me to pour borax into his wounds. But I have a tendency to be fair and reasonable like that, I know many aren’t

Nobody said it was EASY to motivate a team. But that's not the same thing as giving the coach a free pass because his team doesn't play hard.

IMO, it IS a coach's job to light a fire under his team's arse when they aren't playing hard. If the coach doesn't do it, then who will?

A lot of times, competition isnt fair and reasonable. Thats why they give scholarships and invite walk-ons. Otherwise Iowa would have 300 or 400 players showing up to play on the team. I suppose you would be OK with that? Might as well give some 180 lb walk-on, defensive end, as many reps on the practice field, as Clayborn or Ballard, since we are being fair.
I'm sure your players would love to get their participation trophies.
I'm more of a kick in the pants type of person. Especially when I see my team playing the way they did, against MINN.
No participation trophy for that effort.

Holy Snikes who are you guys….who gave him a free pass?!?! Jump on any message board and there is anonymous poster after anonymous poster giving his opinion on how good a job he did. It ultimately falls back on him as he IS the coach! But excuse me if I don’t scream and yell and get real mad at him because he couldn’t keep 18 to 23 year olds “up” every 2nd of the year…..it is a very, very difficult job.

If I ran message board world no one could give their opinion without first filling out a statement talking about where they work, what they do and the successes and failures they’ve had. Negative opinions wouldn’t be near so free and easy then….

Some people try real hard to temper their thoughts through their own success and failures but most don’t. Experience has taught me what kind of people those usually are. We all have our moments, but those who complain and point their fingers the most are….well…….they are what they are.

Nice try at pigeon holing me into the “everyone gets a ribbon” society we have become…but that ain’t me cuz….you'd have to hustle to keep up with me and the way I challenge things. I am maniacally high strung, over the top go, go, go and I expect a ton out of myself and others. I’m the guy who calls MY boss when I’m late or screw up, so no one else can. I’m the one who comes back to the lot to fill holes in the front row if I leave and someone else left an empty spot. I’m literally a freak and my boss would tell you that. All the same you aren’t reaching very many people now a days by kicking them in the pants…

That used to still work about 10 years or so ago when I first became a manager, but it don’t work no more with very many of your guys. And it is dang hard to find good employees, players period so you don’t just get to fire’em....been down that road too….your response shows you have absolutely zero working knowledge of how to lead people in today’s world…

As over the top as I am, I tend to be very open-minded when attempting to critique others. I do have my moments of vitriol as well (like now) but God has molded me to be pretty reasonable as I get older. I’m certainly not one to get on a message board and criticize others for doing a poor job in their profession. Too bad everyone didn’t get the same treatment. People would keep their opinions closer to the vest then.

I'm a firm believer that it's the coach's job to manage all aspects of the team. That said, it shouldn't be his responsibility to get a team pumped up and motivated to play a rivalry game, that falls on the players, because honestly if their heads aren't in it there's nothing a coach can do get the best out of his players. I agree with the fact that if a starter isn't preforming it's time to get the #2 in, but aside from making substitutions its the players who need to be held accountable for not being fired up to play a trophy game.
