Bored out of my skull here so I thought I'd look back on this....Obviously some recent losses and seasons for that matter have really upset us so I decided to see where they might rank historically since Iowa got good in the early 80’s.
In the KF era obviously the 2006 season was a real let down in effort (which was most upsetting) and this last season was very disappointing as well. Probably 2005 was as disappointing a season as any for me and the last time I was really loud and openly critical of KF and staff. That UM game and NW game was a flat give away in my mind. To be fair to the coaches, I honestly thought that team was the beginning of the fat cat attitude and my realization that no matter how talented we were we needed to play with an “edge†about us.
So for KF I’d say…..
2004..shocking beat down vs ASU but all repaired quickly…
2005…UM & NW we were better than both teams and had BOTH easily in hand at the time.
2006…that whole back half season was very sad…..
2007..oddly enuff I thought was the least talented team we have had in 10 years and would have been considered a great coaching job if not for the horrid effort to end the season vs WMU.
2008…we lost to 3-9 win teams in a row. We were better I feel but those weren’t bad losses.
2009….all understandable….
2010….4 tough losses but not out of line, NW included, though it really sucks to lose to them. Minne though was bad….and not the first time we have lost to a bad Minne team in the last 30 years.
Hayden’s most disappointing season in my mind was 1997. Obviously his last season 1998 was bad, and at the end we weren’t even competitive but 1997 was really, really frustrating. That team had all kinds of future NFLers on it including offensives stars Banks, Damon Gibson, Timmy Dwight and a TE I don’t remember and we couldn’t score points by the end of the year. Speaking of bad NW losses…..we scored 14 points vs a 5-7 NW team that gave up 20 points to 9 loss Duke and 21 to 11 loss Illinois. In fact they gave up 20 points to every team but 3, 1 being us! Earlier in the season we had 12-0 UM beat and then we let it slip away.
In 1996 that loss to Tulsa ruined my life. I openly cried out loud in a drunken stupor. That Tulsa team was not good, giving up 30 plus 6 times and all we could muster was 20 with Sedrick Shaw and Tavian Banks at Tail Back.
1995…we lost 4 games in a row one a bludgeoning by 5-5-1 Illinois.
1994…just wasn’t a very good team really
1993… Neither was 1993, barely beating 4-6-1 Tulsa, 3-8 ISU and getting absolutely pummeled by 5-6 Illinois 3-49! Say what you will about KF but he has very few of these games.
1992..ugly loss to 4-7 PU and 2-8 Minne that made us 5-7.
1991...super year but don’t tell me that 13-13 tie to BYU wasn’t upsetting.
1990...good year but we still lost to a very average Minne 6-5 for the 2nd year in a row who had lost 3 of 4 prior and then weren’t very competitive in a Rose Bowl again.
1989…we got crushed @ home 43-7 to a Minne team who had lost 4 of 5.
1988…nothing ugly per se, though losing at Hawaii was upsetting to start the season and we still couldn’t beat a 4-6-1 tSOU.
1986…9-3 Iowa somehow lost to 4-7 Illinois.
1985…great year not competitive in Rose Bowl
1984… lost to 4-7 Minne.
1982...lost to 4-6-1 ISU for the 3rd year in a row, and somehow lost to 3-8 PU by 9!
1981…What a fun ride as a 11 year old boy.
All in all, we loved Hayden and without him there is no KF, but we are even more competitive now and we have even less head scratchers in my mind.
