Any updates from the coaches clinic?

Man, some of these guys can't even spell NIELSEN right. You expect them to differentiate two guys?

LOL. Hard to differentiate between a guy who started as a RS Freshman and one who is going into his Junior year having only seen mop-up duty and some special team reps. Also, one guy's last name is MacMillan and the other's name is McMillan.

My bad, wrong MacMillen/McMillan. The increase in squat weight was impressive. I like the way NOLAN played prior to getting hurt. There, now you can stop pointing out the mistake...or go on if you are enjoying yourself.

In your defense, Vandervelde seems to have indicated that a "light bulb" may have gone on for Casey McMillan. It sounds like he's made some strides and might be more in a position to contribute more over the next two seasons. Of course, that said, given the quality of the competition, it isn't going to be EASY for ANYBODY to nail down those starting OG positions.

Can we put 8 OL on the field at once?

Here's some pretty tantalizing tidbits "ripped off" from southawkeye:

"A few quick notes...
*Donavon Johnson is out for spring ball- grades
*Willie Lowe is not at spring ball- not sure but heard grades also
*Scherff will start at guard this fall, mark my word. Likely battling with Nolan McMillan. Gettis pretty much has the right guard spot at this point, coaches expect him to have a similar senior year as Seth Olsen in 08.
*CJ Fied is gonna be hard to keep off the field, Herman is solid but CJ has NFL ability right now and he is young and unpolished but fans will be impressed by him this fall, and at 265-270lbs he will be like an extra tackle with speed and good hands. Think Tony M but bigger. A coach compared him to Dallas cowboy Jason Witten with better speed.
*Bernstine and Hyde have been working with the 1's at safety with Sleeper rotating in.
*Prater and Lowery have been the corners on first team D.
*Keenan Davis will finally get his chance to shine and has looked very focused this spring
*Last the team's attitude and demeanor this spring has been one of taking care of business, this team lost a lot of high profile players and will be looking to make a name for itself come this fall. The coaches and team are very optimistic about the chance to get some new guys on the field this year."

"Scherff is by all accounts a stud at guard. Also giving us a little more beef in the running game. I think Nolan is more of a right tackle and is playing guard due to need last year and has stayed there since.

I agree that the team should have the all business mentality every spring, I think the difference this year is due to so many seniors leaving and lots of open spots for playing time leading to an increased overall effort by guys trying to get on the field. Last year's squad at this time had few questions other than Linebacker position. Most things were set already. When that happens i think Human Nature is to ease up a bit. That doesn't seem to be the case this year, as healthy of a competition at many positions as I can recall. But with so many unanswered questions heading into this summer, I am still stoked about the potential some of these new faces bring. I think next fall we will put a hurting on some teams that people wouldn't expect."

Wow...if Scherff is indeed seriously in the mix and looking that good, the future is very bright for the Iowa offensive line. I know we probably lose two tackles next year, but the cupboard is full of options. I can't remember this many people in the mix, ever...the battle for playing time is going to be incredible.

Great news on the oline. I wonder what the safety positions will look like when Miller returns. Is he destined for backup again next fall and then coming in after Bernstine leaves? Interesting that Sleeper is in there as well. Also wondering if Law will see any time this fall.

While I think that there will be a little bit of a drop with the new starters at safety because they'll be a bit "green" at the spots .... the good news is that at least our "new" starters at safety are still very familiar with key principles underlying our zone coverages.

I think that when Miller returns, he'll still be in the picture to compete for a starting spot. From what I understand, many players have alluded that our FS and SS spots aren't all that dissimilar ... so guys can often interchangeably play them. However, that said, there are still differences between the spots. Anyhow, Miller was prepped a bit more to play FS ... so how might he fare when getting reps at SS? At the very least, Miller will be Hyde's backup at FS. The bigger question is how close the competition will be between Bernstine, Miller, and Sleeper.

What is rather intriguing is Ferentz's comments comparing Sleeper to Edds ... that definitely took me a bit by surprise. However, that said, Norm had "talked up" Nick Nielsen a few years back ... and he's yet to really break on the scene. Of course, Norm does seem to be prone to exaggerate when he's discussing any position group other than LB. Of course, in defense of Norm, Nick Nielsen has been caught behind multi-year starters at safety.

As for whether Law will see early action ... yeah, I definitely think that he'll see the field. However, I think that he'll primarily be contributing through special teams. If he does much beyond that, I'd assume that it would either be in particular defensive packages to allow him to get his feet wet OR in clean-up duty.

The more and more I think about Iowa's secondary, the more and more comfortable I get thinking about their chances of being a very solid group. Here are my predictions:

CB:
starters - Prater, Lowery
backups - Castillo, Campbell and Lomax

remarks: I predict that BOTH TR FR cbs will see early action. I anticipate that they will see action primarily on special teams, but they'll also likely have a chance to contribute some in clean-up duty too.

S:
starters - Hyde, Bernstine/Miller
backups - Sleeper, Donatell, Law

remarks: In the past, we often have had a 3rd safety contribute quite a bit and have pretty decent production. I think that we'll definitely see that this year. Furthermore, given that we're going to face a number of team pretty early who are going to lean pretty heavily on the pass ... I think that we're going to be more willing than usual to use multi-DB looks.
