Turning point last night

I thought the turning point was when Taylor got the and 1 when Cole was clearly set for at least a second. We were up 6 I believe when that happened. If a charge is called, Carver erupts and we more than likely win. Instead they cut the lead in half.
 


Cole was the 2nd defender and was in the area under the basket where the invisible line is drawn. It was technically a foul but man I hate that call because it's so inconsistent. There were quite a few turning points in what turned out to be an outstanding basketball game.

Tough loss but I think we can all see where this team is heading.

Isnt that just an NBA rule?
 


It looked to me like Cole was outside the imaginary arc. They really need to add the arc to the floor for next season.
 


I cant remember who got called for the charge for the Hawks earlier on in the game but that was bogus. The Badger defender was still moving and fell back before any contact was made.

How can Big 10 officiating be so terrible? Not just because some calls went against the Hawks. Every game I watch there are at least a handful of calls that just make you shake your head.

The refs either want to make it a big show about themselves (Hightower, Valentine, Hillary, old white guy that I cant remember his name) or they are just plain terrible. In some cases its both.

Its not a college rule. I can stand under the basket and take a charge but the refs never call it.

Charge / Blocks suck cuz they are never consistent. In the first half can't be sure who it was, think it was cartwright, we drove and the wisky defender was directly on his hip, no where near the front of him and then flopped backwards and he got a charge call, that was ridiculous.
 


May not controlling the 2 slams and getting points.
McCabe twice missing shots close to the basket that weren't necessarily easy but.
Not getting Marble back in the game in the line up where Taylor had to guard him. Devyn was quicker and has enough handles to take him every time.Gatens amd May didn't have strong games but a final lineup with a chance to win of BC,DM,MG,MB and Cole gives us two penetrators that Wisky couldn't handle a shooter for the kick out a beast inside to do pick and roll and a rebounder that does his best work coming from the outside in.
No real swing point in this game as Iowa battled back to even and owned the chance to win. IMO FM is probably right with not calling the TO to let Wisky plan but Devyn went pretty much unstopped when BC was in as a threat as well so our best chance was having him in there.
 


Definitely was a charge by Taylor without any question. Then of course the bogus charge call against Iowa that Doyle even commented on. With that said, I don't think it was a turning point as Wisconsin wasn't going away. This game was going to be decided on the final shot either way.
 


I thought a turning point was at the end of regulation you always try to get your best player the ball. Why are we not looking at Basabe down low, he had his way down their and at worst he gets fouled.

Also at the end of ot does anyone remember if the Hawks had a time out because it seemed no one knew what they were supposed to do.

This is being discussed ad nauseum in another thread.
 


In the first half, when Wisconsin couldn't throw a golf ball through a hula hoop, I was worried that we never got up by more than 7. I knew that if we were unable to put them away after that, then we wouldn't have put them away under any circumstances. So I don't think there really was a turning point, since Wisconsin was pretty much going to keep that game close through sheer force of will.

However, the fact that we were able to hang with Wisconsin after their offense geared up was amazing, and definately an unexpected bright spot.
 


Three missed dunks, a missed layup at point blank range by McCabe, and giving up double digit offensive rebounds. That's a good place to start I think.
 


The rule was changed this year...altho the line is not painted(it should be) the refs are supposed to call the block/charge under the bucket as if it was there. I thought it was stupid when they issued that new interpetation without painting the arc under the bucket,and makes it really tough for the refs.

My personal turning point was when Hawks were up 6 and Valentyn came off the bench and hit that three pointer. The crowd was in full roar,and he is coming off the bench cold...if he misses,we can push it to 8 or 9 and we win,imo.
 


No issue with the last shot in regulation...

Iowa knew what they wanted to run and ran it. Calling timeout would have allowed Wisconsin to set up a different defense, perhaps double-team Cartwright, etc. Cartwright had good space to take that shot. I believe the play they ran gave Cartwright the option of looking for Basabe or taking his man off the dribble if there was no help there. Wisky didn't help and Cartwright was able to clear space and get a good look from 15 feet.

End of OT was overtime was as different story but that was going to be tough no matter what.
 


Pretty evenly officiated game IMO. You can't win giving up 16 offensive boards. We have some tired legs out there due to all the minutes these kids are logging and it is starting to show. May and Basabe were gassed. Would have been nice to throw Archie out there just for some fresh rebounding legs, but he was in street clothes.

sorry 101, but it is a college rule. The arc is supposed to be smaller than that in the NBA. It would be drawn exactly under the rim. Cole was not in that arc.
