Incoming Class

No I pointed to the 2 players with the biggest star potential. Having seen Braxton play 4 times this season I don't need Scout or Rivals to tell me he's good. And Grant has been a combine star and has a who's who of offer lists. I don't care how many stars he may have but when your offer list includes perennial top 10 teams I would say it's safe to say the kid has star potential. I judge kids more by their highlight tapes, combine performances and offer sheets than I do whether Scout, rivals or ESPN give the a certain number of stars.

And if I'm such a star gazer what is your coach? He offered a lot of the 4-5 star guys didn't he? I respect what Ferentz has done at Iowa but the truth is that the state of Iowa doesn't in itself possess enough top tier talent to take Iowa to the "next level".

Yeah, those two 3 point losses the last two years have really shown just how far apart the recruiting classes have been, right? If your classes were so much better than ours, you should be throat-stomping us.

Watch the film and there is a difference....and no offense to homer but I think I watch a little more film on these kids than he does.

fufred -

Are you really going to go "there?"

It's obviously a no brainer that 5-star guys hop out on tape. Yes ... I can tell that too. That was not the implication I was making before.

The bigger issue is how a collection of football players execute and play as a TEAM. There is a reason why football is often referred to as the "ultimate team sport."

Dynamic playmakers can certainly help to make a team more explosive, however, those guys do not diminish the importance of hard work, toughness, execution, and the collective play of the TEAM.

Lastly, I certainly grant that you likely watch more tape than I do. However, my wife also reads much more quickly than I and consequently reads more books than I do ... and yet my reading comprehension and retention is far superior. Thus, in watching tape, knowledge and attention to detail is every bit as important as "quantity."

Where Iowa gets hit regards depth. Furthermore, Iowa squads often have the additional constraint of having to ascend a steeper learning curve since we have to feature fewer "plug'n play" talents. However, usually, Iowa does NOT take a hit when it comes to comparing the talent of starters.

The issue of "depth" and learning curve simply gets manifest when it comes to margin for error and the consistency of our W-L record.

That is a big reason why tOSU's deeper and richer recruiting base DOES pay off.

However, as for Iowa reaching the "next level" ... the issue there simply concerns consistently having only 0 to 2 loss records. Iowa hasn't consistently gotten that taken care of ... however, Iowa has proven to be able to play with the nation's best through the years.

Will Iowa ever take the "next step" and be more dominating and also end up more consistently only having 0 to 2 loss seasons (like tOSU)? I don't know.

However, I must say that I'm more than happy with the product that Ferentz is selling.

No where near OSU's class? Hmmmmmmm. Their class was ranked 10th by most publications, and Iowa's was ranked 24th. That seems like relatively the same vicinity. They had the best class in the big ten, and we had the #2 class. That also seems like its relatively close.

don't feed the deace-bag.

I am stoked about this class. I think many of these guys will be big time players. Realistically I think many of these guys will leave school, not get grades, and get hurt too. It's a fact of the game. I really like the class and I think we got some good solid kids......we need that

I really think we have a nice year in 2011. I know we under delivered last year but I got a feeling we really over deliver this fall.

Honest question fufred, why do you post here? Why an Iowa Hawkeye board? Do you post on other opponents sites also, if so which ones? Do you post on OSU board more or less than other sites?

Just curious, as it doesn't even cross my mind to go to a OSU board, or any other teams board at all to post....

He posts here because, like many fans of teams who are perennially strong, he feels that he is able to impass knowledge that no other fan can share. He is a fan of OSU therefore he is superior to everyone else. He waches more film on recruits than any Iowa fan could ever imagine too(why that is something to be proud of I am not sure).

His posting here is important to us in some way, as though he is helping us out. His life revolves around watching more 18 yr old boys than any other guy here and then coming here to tell us how we don't have as much "talent".

Not a sad guy who looks for self worth by pretending to know more than others. Nope not at all.
