Iowa's management of this fiasco has been terrible

If the rumors are true, then it's going to be one big you know what storm for the next several years. If they are not true, then the Iowa athletic department has done a **** poor job of getting out in front of this story and stopping all of the rumors and innuendo.

The rumors have gone national now, on ESPN the comments under the story have people saying over 20 players are going to be suspended, the Hawks are all a bunch of drug users, etc. If there is nothing to this story, how can Camp Kinnick we lagging so far behind this and not coming out and stating that all of this is false? The university and this teams image is being destroyed right in front of my eyes, and it doesn't seem like anyone is doing anything about it?

I guess it boils down to either way, if everything I have heard is true or if it is all lies, heads should be rolling in the football staff.

How about we let them have the scheduled press conference tomorrow and hear what Gary and Kirk have to say.

Who cares what some people say on an ESPN message board?

Torches, pitchforks, and unsubstantiated speculation are much more interesting.

Help me out here.

If the situation is out of control, how did it get that way? Where did the rumors start? How did they become so wide spread?

Hawkeye fans were the ones posting rumors, spreading rumors, tweeting about rumors, and in the big scheme of things, Hawkeye fans did it to themselves (those that overtly participated in the rumor spreading).

I agree, Iowa could have done a much better job. Considering how this season has been managed this shouldn't come to anyone's surprise. This is a college program and should be managed that way.

Exactly. Nobody outside of Iowa and possibly Missouri gives a crap. If Hawkeye fans don't like the rumors, they have only themselves to blame.

I guess I prefer the good old days when we whined about beating Michigan State by 30.

If you truly want to have a clean program, then you have to gave full disclosure. Nothing short of that, because that is what allows for secrets. If camp kinnick wasn't run with as much secracy as the Gestapo it also wouldn't happen.

Oh I totally agree it's been the Iowa fan base that has blown this thing up. I don't think I have ever been more disapointed of people who call themselves Hawkeye fans. It seems like several people on here today were let down that only one player was being suspended, as if they were excited to think it would be more than that.

Yet I don't think the staff can sit back and pretend that none of this talk is going on. I do hope tomorrow morning clears everything up, I guess maybe I am just impatient by nature and want this all to be cleared up and be over with. When I have friends around the country texting me to ask if I am going to IC to fire up blunts with the Hawkeyes, it kind of upsets me. Especially when I have always touted the way our program is ran by Ferentz and Co. to them.

And I really hope that Robinson's suspension has nothing to do with drugs. My son idolizes him, he was upset to hear about DJK, but I am pretty sure it would crush him if that is the case. And if he wasn't suspended for anything to do with that, I wish that could have been conveyed today, because it's making him look guilty even if it has nothing to do with that.

Huh? Iowa fans did this to themselves. I think most of those that are disappointed are people that told everyone they knew that they had some inside scoop on huge happenings with the Iowa program only to find out they were part of the perpetuating rumors and therefore, part of the problem.

As I said before, things are rarely as good or bad as they seem. This seems to ring especially true when it comes to internet rumors.

excellent thread!!! we have been bashing the players all day and have been proven wrong, so now lets bash the school!!

people are fricking idiots. have you not noticed how tight iowa is with sports info? its known as "fort kinnick" for a reason. not to mention that there are privacy laws that dictate what can be said...so dont get excited hoping to get answers from Kirk tomorrow.

the fans/posters/bloggers all brought it on themselves and now they are standing there with their dicks in their hands.

I understand your frustration, but let's keep some perspective here. DJK was arrested five days ago. That's not a lot of time to a) process and deal with the DJK incident, b) investigate the rest of the team for any problems, c) if any problems are uncovered, look for proof, decide on appropriate discipline, and administer that discipline, d) deal with Wegher, e) work out a plan with Barta/Mims/Mason, f) manage the press, etc., etc., etc.

I realize we want everything to happen immediately. But the absolute worst thing to do would have been to make a half-cocked statement that later proved to be false, or an intentionally vague statement that spurred even more rumors. Seriously, five days is not a heck of a lot of time to investigate something as large and complicated as a football program, especially when your athletes are supposedly attending class, taking finals, etc. That kind of stuff takes time to get right, and I guess time is just not something fans are willing to give.

The rumor mongering is in poor taste, but I think what is driving it is that as fans, and just as people in general, when there is a bad rumor about you, you do everything in your power to dispel it as quickly and as ruthlessly as possible.

I don't think the fans are wrong to want an answer, hell, just coming out and saying that there is not going to be an answer would satisfy a good portion of the fans.

The biggest problem I see here is how many people started and/or continued to rant based on factless rumors they heard from someone else. I've yet to see anyone who had any fact-based information they were passing on, just what they heard from someone else, probably from a tweet from someone they don't know, etc.

This entire issue bubbled up out of no where, based on little to zero facts and it's amazing how many people allowed, or volunteered to get sucked into that situation.

Good lord people, get a life. When the facts come out, then you may have a reason to be concerned, or something to ***** about, but in the mean time, all of the Jr. High level rumor spreading is really childish.

I got out of Jr. High in 1974. Personally, I don't see any value in participating in the "Guess what I heard......." conversations.

Sounds a lot like something I wrote here last night. Couldn't agree more.

This place is like a bunch of 7th grade girls sometimes.

amen brother. spot on post.

I can't believe how upset people are over the fact that the rumors of 10 players getting suspended for failing a drug test didn't come to fruition.

Do people NOT understand how much of a non-story this is outside of the state of Iowa and outside the internet message board world???

Do people NOT understand that 1) KF would NEVER comment on baseless rumors like this and 2) If he did make a statement saying the rumors (to which most of the world has not heard) are not true that it would give the "story" way more attention than the way it's been handled.

People need to seriously step away from the keyboard and then practice a little common sense.

Not exactly sure what you expected from the university? That yes, up to 20 players will be suspended because of a drug ring? All of this broke about five days ago. Fans are the ones blowing this up and saying they have sources saying this and saying that. Yes, where there is smoke there is usually at least a spark. But the athletic department has to have its ducks in a row before coming out with vague or inaccurate information. Tomorrow's timing is perfect because the school does need to say something. But has to have accurate information before it says anything.

I am sure Kirk and Gary are gathering facts and tomorrow they will share some informaion. While i don't expect anything earth shattering to come out of tomorrow's presser (not Kirk's style), it will be interesting to see how hard the media presses Kirk for answers to the countless rumors floating around. Working in media relations, there is more to it than you think. You have to have your facts and you have to prep yourself to respond to the questions i am sure they are coming. All of these rumors just recently started to heat up so i think the school is now doing what it needs to do-address what is known and out the kabosh on some of the crazy accusations.

baahtt! you indicated 4th grade girls ;)

Nonetheless, Just as DM and Bo Hawk indicated, the University actually has moved very swiftly in regards to putting together a press conference to answer any inter-team movements or infractions, that for most part were not even rumored about until past 48 hours. Some people need to take a step back. It is scary what mountains some people want to have moved just to get a rise or an answer to something that they may not care about the real answers to anyways. b*tch just to b*tch.
