Rewind 2007: Ferentz Asked about Replacing KOK

Honestly, they should have hired Dan McCarney or Glen Mason.

I really and truly don't think that Indiana cares about football. It is a diversion until basketball season starts.

They do care, a lot, about basketball. Crean better win this year or next or they will make a change.

We're conservative on both sides of the ball and we could argue all day on how successful we are because of it. It's taken me a lomg time for this realization, but Kirk isn't about to jettison any coach for reasons that we fans would find to be a fireable offense. He would sooner quit than have anybody force is hand too.

At this point in time I'll blame players and execution before I blame the coaches. We had numerous injuries on both sides of the ball as well as a player or two not living up to expectations.

Kirk's comment about how he couldn't imagine having someone better at the OC position is laughable.

I just can't understand how so many people can be convinced that Iowa's offensive conservative nature is all KOK's fault. Check out this quote from the 2007 article:

“It’s just who we are and it’s not going to change,â€￾ O’Keefe said. “Kirk has had a plan and has a plan and we’re sticking to the plan.â€￾

“First of all, I think he’s a quality coach, an outstanding coach and I can’t imagine us having someone better in that position,” Ferentz said. “That’s the major problem on that request.”

He really thinks KOK is the best.... Wow.

"Ferentz and O’Keefe began working together in 1978 at Worcester (Mass.) Academy. But Ferentz was quick to point out that personal relationships have nothing to do with what’s going on in the Iowa football offices."

LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES.

It may be Ferentz micro-managing. Regardless if it is Tweedledee, or Tweedledum calling and running the plays, between both of them, they sure do know how to screw up a 2 minute offense in both games. I wonder who truly calls the bulk of the plays? I would assume that is KOK and Ferentz decides whether to put his stamp of approval on them or not during game situations.

Jon, do you think if KOK were to ever leave, Ferentz would just promote or hire another coach to call the same type of game plan on offense? It does kind of make you wonder who is the true "goat" behind the scenes.

Good article to bring forth.

How can you not realize this assessment doesn't exonerate the coaches?

According to the Indiana and Oklahoma boards, it sounds like a deal with OU Off. Coor. Kevin Wilson is done. OU boards are already discussing who their next OC should be. No mention of them wanting KOK.

Considering it's pretty much a proven fact the Ferentz is one of the most conservative coaches in CFB, how do any of us know that KOK would like to run a different offense (or at least open it up a little) but Ferentz will not let him?

Fair point but lets look at the facts as we know them. Barta isn't going to micromanage and I think from what I've read and seen at I-Club events i don't believe he's micromanaging play calling on game day until he wants to override something as he did a few years ago in Minnesota when Albert Young slipped on 4th down and cost us the game up in Minneapolis.

Many fans are typically too stupid to realize the overarching impact that a head coach has on the schemes chosen on the team. Defensive-minded coaches invariably institute "their" system on D. Offensive-minded coaches invariably institute "their" system on O.

Quite frankly, it's rather something that Ferentz just threw the keys of the car over to Norm when it came to the D ... and then he them placed more emphasis on his "baby" (i.e. the O and, in particular, the OL).

If KOK is such a great offensive mind, then why the hell would he have stuck around in such a conservative offense for 12 years? Why didn't he move on long ago? Why is his name never mentioned as being considered for a job opening?

And don't confuse the situation - this is apparently KOK showing interest in Indiana, not the other way around.

It seems apparent that nobody wants KOK except KF.
