Unreal the short memories

OK, I'm overseas trying to follow the game. No chat option so I figured I'd follow the game thread. Not an easy task considering the connectivity here. All I'm seeing are posts about how bad KF sucks or this is the worst coaching staff ever, time to fire the staff or let's bring in someone else, outcoached AGAIN. This D is the worst ever, AC sucks...Blah blah blah. No wonder we are one of the most hated, or ridiculed, fan bases.

If possible, I'd like to see the thread(s) after last years Orange Bowl. My guess is the same one's are calling for a KF statue, AC is the best player to wear an IA uni...make up your minds. Some things to remember:

The loss of Spievey was probably a lot bigger than you think. Injuries to the LBs hurt more than you can imagine, it completly changes the defensive game plan. Maybe I haven't watched the same games as the rest of you but it seems to me there has been a lot of pressure on the opposing QBs, they just have been able to find the openings in the middle of the field...where the true frosh LB is playing.

Last year's team was an 8-4/9-3 team who got a lot of breaks, now you know what happens when they don't. Before you say it, GA Tech's O is specialized that preparation is tough with a short amount of time. Look at them this year.

On the other hand, remember how bad "this team sucks" or "this coaching staff sucks" is and if you truly believe that, how could you expect anything different than the results this year? Of course, whining and crying also help.

Spievey's departure hurt no doubt and so did Bulaga's but I've actually been fairly impressed with the O-line especially as much as we lost. I think they've been a pleasant surprise. The problem my dear HawkFrenzy is the inability of our D to get off the field on 3rd downs yet again. We don't blitz we play it so vanilla it really isn't a surprise that team just pick us apart. So can you justify giving up almost 40 plays in a half to a team that hasn't led in a Big 10 game once besides today? What do you think it is due to....Johnson and Hunter are Sr. so don't give me the injury crap plus everyone has them at this point in the year.

And special teams have been pretty good today. Love the squiv kick late in the half.

The easy answer so far is that Minny came to play and I think the Hawks thought they just needed to show up.

I am betting there is a bit of an A$$ CHEWING going on at halftime and the Hawks will come back and win by 2 to 3 touchdowns in the second half.

Defense has been awfully vanilla so far and Minny is taking the underneath stuff and then getting yards after the catch to gain some first downs.

HawkFrenzy - I assume if you are overseas trying to follow the game you are serving in the military??

I think this has been the biggest problem: those injuries HAVEN'T changed the gameplan. They just have made the gameplan less effective. Our schemes haven't adjusted much to reduce some of the pressure on the linebackers, even though we currently have ZERO of the three starters from Week 1 on the field (and it's been like for the past couple weeks).

Last year's team was an 8-4/9-3 team who got a lot of breaks, now you know what happens when they don't.

This is a very true statement. Last year the breaks went Iowa's way and everybody was happy. This year the breaks have gone the other way. That is the difference between 11-2 and 9-4.

You're right, Iowa definitly has more talent and "should" not be in this position. The team is not as deep as everyone assumes and too many were riding last year's season thinking there is more talent than there really is. (Note: when I'm talking talent I am including game experience)

My point was about the inconsistency and how fickle many are. I'm talking about those who, after every win, say KF is the best coach ever then every loss say he needs to be fired. Then will say how great the D is then say they shouldn't be on the field. BTW, when was the last time Iowa was blown out? Yes i know, last minute drives hurt in every loss but so did missed FGs, blocked punts, KO returns, INTs...

Last year the breaks went Iowa's way, this year not so much. I guess if you really think KF and staff suck as much as they do then I guess he must have lost his lucky rabbit's foot from the past several years, since if he sucks then he must not have anything to do with wins either.

There have been way to many "Hawk Fans" calling out the coaches this year for losing games.

I think the Boise coach said it best last night after his kicker missed two field goals, one to win the game and one in overtime, when he said "one play does not lose a game but one play can win a game". There have been lots of plays that were just missed this year, some to make a stop on defense, some to extend drives and keep the defense off the field in the fourth quarter.

This team has just not made the plays the team last year made. That is the difference.

And just as I hit send we get an illegal substitution penalty on the punt return team to give Minny a first down.

Defense steps up and stops Minny again. Punt coming.

Stanzi is not throwing the ball well today at all.

I think he is like 1 for his last 6 or 7 and several have not even been close!!!

Good post. Way too much negativity on HN lately IMHO. Maybe some of those will read your post and recognize themselves.

Iowa could have created their own breaks this year by playing to win instead of playing not to lose. If my memory serves me correctly, we led every game in the fourth quarter that we ended up losing. Coaching has been atrocious this year, especially in the second half. The defense has been a huge let down this year overall. Not sure if you have watched any games from overseas, but if you have, you would understand our frustration! As I type this, Minny is starting to nickle and dime us down the field, just like Indy and NW. It is embarrassing!

Lion, yes I am. And thanks for the update. I'm trying to follow it on espn but the gametrax keeps shutting down my computer.

I know coaching has a lot to do with Ws and Ls but those are part of the game too. They all get outcoached once in a while and are on the other end at times. It's a growing process. Take Wisconsin, great coaching decision on the fake punt, it happens but I see this as no reason for a coaching change in IA city.

HawkFrenzy - Just wanted during the holiday season to say THANK YOU for your service to our country.

TAKE CARE AND STAY SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

PAPA - Here is an exact reference to my point!!!

IOWA HAWKEYE FOOTBALL is far from embarrassing. If you are embarrassed you should have been a Hawk Fan back in the 60's and 70's like some of us were.

I hate to say it but this reminds me of Western Michigan.

Very little fire on the Hawks side of the ball.

Fumble. Good strip by Binns - Hawk ball on the Iowa 30. Nice pass by Stanzi to mid field. End of the Third.

DJK has definitely had the fire today, he's bringing his A-game. That fumble is the break we desperately needed. LET'S GO HAWKS!!!!!
