Miller: Rankings Shenanigans

It doesn't matter folks. We haven't beaten anyone. Quit complaining because this Iowa team hasn't earned anything yet.

WE HAVE OUR CHANCE to earn respect in our next 4 games. If we win our next 4 games we'll be back in the top 10 guaranteed. Depending on how things shake out in other conferences over the next 4 weeks and how Arizona does if we finish our game at home against Michigan State with an 7-1 record we could be ranked as high as 7th in the nation the way I see it.

Beat OSU and we'll be knocking on the BCS title game door. Lots of football to be played and thus far the only team we've played is Arizona and we lost...

That isn't the point, K-Berg.

Jon, why are you surprised at any of this? Anyone who spends any time at all on the net knows that the so-called "experts" are way behind the curve when it comes to understanding what is really going on. For every Herbie there are tens of morons who get space/face time in the MSM (CJ, Beano, Lou, etc). Regardless, the Hawks just need to take care of biz - sooner or later even the dumb sh*ts will come around.

All this is one reason why I have trouble supporting a playoff system. No one is really sure what you need to do to make the playoffs. When the decision is left in the voters hands, it can be frustrating.

Jon,
Do you think that since the game against Arizona kicked off so late, many voters saw the first half, looked at the score and went to bed? I know Iowa doesn't get respect and really hasn't ever, but I gotta think that the part that most of the nation saw, was by far, the ugliest.

Jon, Who should Iowa have jumped pounding a patsy? Arkansas? Miami, with a quality win over Pitt? Not gonna happen. Hardly call that shenanigans.

How is Miami's win over Pitt quality? Pitt is awful. Outside of Arkansas, Iowa is the best 1 loss team in the country. I don't mind not making a jump this week, but if Iowa starts winning in the B10, we better start seeing the serious movement into the top 10.

Texas and South Carolina. End of story.

Those two teams for sure. Texas isn't even a top 25 team. In fact, I'll be willing to bet that they won't finish the year in the top 25. Without a QB, that team is in trouble.

Get. Real.

South Carolina might be a bit of a reach. But Texas has no business being in the top 20. You can't get dismantled at home by a poor team and still be ranked that high, unless you're Texas.

Jon also wasn't just picking on it because of Iowa's placement. Stanford made a huge jump for "beating up on a patsy" (which is all ND is at this point). He highlighted a few others as well.

I agree with the first sentence and I will give my opinion to the question.
None of us should be surprised at any of this because:
The polls are all about the advertising $$$..... getting people excited about watching two similarly "ranked" teams.
The media poll especially looks at upcoming match-ups and ranks teams up or down so that when it comes time for, for example, Texas to play Oklahoma, both teams are ranked and no matter who wins or loses, both will still be ranked afterwards.
Its easier for the networks to get eyes to watch a game in which 2 "ranked' teams are playing, than it is for a game that features a ranked team vs. one that isn't, regardless of whether a team deserves to be ranked or not really has little to do with where they are ranked.
Next Sat. night after all the games have been played and the outcomes are known, take a look ahead at who is playing who 2-3 weeks down the road FIRST, their record second, and the Sunday "ranking" will make much more sense.
Its all about keeping as many college football fans as interested as possible. Simple as that....

But one huge thing Texas has going for it is that the Big 12 is very weak this year.

They'll hang around the top 25 I'm sure, just because they're "Texas"!

It's early and most of this will take care itself. Teams like Texas and Nebraska will fall from the top 10 if they don't belong there(they don't IMO). I like where Iowa is right now because it's realistic. Not having proven anything yet, no one knows how they'll hold up in the Big Ten. Win the next four games and no one will deny they're a top ten team. If we don't win those games we have no business being in the top ten. The one team that will obviously escape the fate they deserve is Boise but SOS may yet be they're undoing.

As I pointed out in this thread, Miami has done more than Iowa IMO so far and that is why I don't have a problem with them jumping Iowa. Winning at Pitt is far greater than home wins for Iowa against E. Ill, ISU and Ball St, and at the time of their losses, Miami lost at the #2 team by 12 while Iowa lost by 7 at the #18 team, IMO their loss isn't as bad as Iowa's.
