Vanderbilt

If Gronowski can have the accuracy he had in the Nebraska or even the Rutgers game, Iowa might be able to loosen up the running game. Vandy is not very good at defending the pass but is rather stout against the run.

If Gronowski has no accuracy, than Iowa is playing in a phone booth, and the running game will get stuffed.
Yup it's pretty much just like every other Iowa game ever. First team to 20 wins

I don't disagree that Gronowski needs to have a good game but I do think Vandy's rush defense is a bit over rated. Stuffing teams like Charleston Southern (FCS) and Georgia State don't impress me much, I'm going out on a limb here and stay Iowa has a better offensive line than those 2 schools. You look at their defensive stats broken down by game (see below) and the teams that were good at running the ball were able to run on Vandy's defense. I think Iowa will need to rush for at least 150 yards to have a chance to win this game, they are 7-1 when rushing for over 150 yards with the only loss being at USC.

Iowa's rushing defense stats are a pretty similar story. Shut down the bad teams, got run over by the good rushing teams.

Vandy held 5 teams under 100. Charleston S, Georgia St, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tenn
Iowa held 5 teams under 100 Albany, UMass, Rutgers, Minn and Mich St

Vandy gave up 210 to Auburn, 170 to Mizzou and 146 to Bama
Iowa gave up 261 to Oregon, 231 to Nebraska and 173 to Penn St

Iowa's O line is outstanding, but Vandy's run D won't be a pushover.

It makes for an interesting matchup.

I don't mean to be rude but what does Iowa's run defense have to do with them being able to run at least 150 yards against Vandy? I am not claiming Vandy is going to be a pushover but I do think they are a bit over rated. Iowa will be in trouble if they cannot run the ball against Vandy.

If you are saying Iowa's rushing defense is over rated, that's possible, Oregon is very good at running the ball and Nebraska had one of the top running backs in college football. Iowa will have their hands full stopping Pavia.

Some were saying Vandy's rush defense isn't that good and using examples of their games against lesser opponents and good opponents as evidence. If you asked most people here about Iowa's defense they would likely tell you it was really good, even against the run, yet our stats have a similar pattern. Every team has weak opponents that figure into their total stats.

Vandy's defense ranks #16 against the run. They're good. They had some games where teams were successful against them, just like Iowa did.

But Iowa has GOT to run the ball in order to have a chance in this game and, yes, I do see some reasons to believe their rush defense is a tad over rated. Auburn does not have anything special for a rush offense, if they can run for over 200 yards against Vandy I don't think I'm asking too much for Iowa getting 150.

We def need to run the ball to win this one...like most of 'em. We've got one of the best O lines in the country so we can get it done. I was just saying suggesting that their stat line is deceptive isn't a real strong point. You don't get to #16 in the country with smoke and mirrors. They have a good run D.

I don’t want this to turn into the 2024 Citrus Bowl(or whatever the f*ck it is called). Iamaleava being unstoppable…stirring up the stereotypical SEC/BIG bullshit. Just give me a good game, give me the reverse of last year’s Music City Bowl, where Iowa wins in a late close game.:)
