Kelley Mitchell of the WNBA Indiana Fever diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. I have not heard that term in a long, long time. I always assumed it was caused by overdoing the weight training. Not that simple, I guess.

Yeah it's a combination of overheating/dehydration and physical exertion. I'd say those 3 boxes she had checked. She may not have been hydrated well enough and that goes back a couple days not just the day of. She runs so hard that I can see that being possible for her to contract it.

It's so important to have it diagnosed quickly like she did cause it's symptoms are so similar to just regular cramping but if left untreated the damage to your kidneys can be really really bad pretty fast. It'll make your urine a dark red too that's often a tell tale sign. It's pretty rare only 200k cases or so a yr mostly by higher level athletes. She probably won't be herself for a couple weeks but they got it so soon I think she'll be fine.

Nice summary. Thanks!

It would have been interesting to see if Mitchell could have played if the Fever had advanced to the WNBA finals instead of losing their elimination game in overtime .

I'm no quack by any means but my guess is that she wouldn't have been good to go by Friday at all... Just depends how careful they woulda wanted to be with her once she started feeling better. My guess is they'd have held her out of serious running for a week-10 days. So if the series were to go 5 plus games maybe she coulda played the last 3 games or so of it. Hard to say for sure.
