Inaugural Depth Chart

Why do we have such short WR's?
There is a real advantage to having height at this position and we continue to have under-average size.

Phillips is undersized at 5'7" but the two other starting WRs are 6'0". And don't be surprised if Reece Vander Zee (6'4") is on the field a lot and especially in crunch time/red zone situations. I'm more concerned in our WRs production than their size at this point. Phillips had a lot of interest in the transfer portal this year.

And KJ Parker is listed at 5'10". I fully expect him to make a name for himself this year. That guy really had my attention at the spring game this year.

Lester made it abundantly clear that “speed” not height is his priority. Watched an interview with him and he spent a lot of time breaking down his expectations for wide receivers. Said small receivers can be taught to be physical.

Further evidence that KF is letting Lester run the offense the way that Lester wants to. Recruiting faster WRs at the expense of height and possibly blocking has not been the norm at Iowa during the KF era.

KF hired the chef and he is letting him select the ingredients. As it should be.

Short, quick guys with an accurate QB can be a deadly combination. Tyreek Hill has been one of the best WRs in the league for a while now. If anything, I have grown tired of the slow, tall WRs we seemed to gather under BF. Speed kills. Lester knows that. Let's see how it plays out.
Having one or two short, quick guys can be an advantage. It can also be an advantage to have taller, long WRs who can go up and get 'jump balls'. A combination is ideal. We'll have that when VanderZee is on the field. When he's not...

Yeah cause when you play the back shoulder/jump balls to the taller longer guys there's no strategy that goes into that. Just chemistry with the QB and receiver It's just basketball on grass. You're posting up a power forward on the pg in some cases. We had fun doing that with Brandon Smith occasionally but he wasn't like Megatron or anything.

6'0 and under guys that are quick/fast/and can change direction give mobile qbs more of a chance on broken plays too. That said RVZ will play a lot still and be a redzone target. He's not gonna be riding the bench all yr we all know better then that. Hell I expect to see Howard out there more too just cause he's gotten better .

I think folks are overreading the depth chart. I expect RVZ will have as many or more snaps than any of the receivers. There are a lot of veteran receivers on the squad and it does not shock me that a true sophomore coming off some injuries is not listed as a starter. Very KF, and we all know how much KF doesn't give a rip about a depth chart he is forced to give the media. Who lines up on the first play aint all that important. He will get his reps and opportunities to make plays, like all of those top 6 guys.
