Gronowski

Its easy to get excited reading things like that, but every program feels that way right before the season is going to kick in. It would be hilarious to have a quote from a player like: "we really regressed a lot in the offseason. We lost some great players to the draft and portal, and the guys we found to replace them just aren't as good. The coaches can see that and really aren't into things right now. A lot of them are checking Indeed.com for side gigs. We will do our best, but don't get too excited." :)

Guessing this is the best offense since KoK ran it.
This is the best QB we have had since Beatherd.

The Stanley years under BF were sneaky decent on offense. In 2019 Stanley threw for almost 3,000 yards and 16 TDs. He also was an effective runner. I have posted this before, but if we just had that good of an offense the last 4 years we would have challenged for the conference title every year. That's how good the D has been, even when coupled with an incompetent offense most of that span.

I have this unshakeable fear the O takes a big step forward but the D becomes mediocre.

Stanley was such an enigma. He played with some stud WRs/TEs and had some great games. But also had some absolute stinkers too. If he coulda just had his bad games against Wisconsin back I bet he'd be looked at differently. I really liked him I thought the team all responded well to him. Just too bad we didn't have a little more success then we did under him

So you're still saying Gronowski is already better than Stanley?

Good talent around him but still an archaic offensive system.

Agreed. Stanley is certainly not the standard Iowa should aspire to. Lester can recruit and produce at a higher level than that. But, given what followed Stanley, and how putrid it was, he looked good by comparison. We just needed an effective QB from 2021-25 given the D and special teams.

Its been a long time since Iowa has had a really good offense and a mediocre defense. If ever, under KF.

If Iowa's offense does take a big step forward, as you are predicting, I still don't see the D devolving into mediocrity.

That said, and as I have stated in other threads, there is a relationship between Iowa's great D of late and its putrid offense of late. Parker has benefitted from the fact that opposing OC's know that they probably only need to score 17 points to beat Iowa. So, opposing offenses typically played conservatively. Iowa played a lot of games in a phone booth the last 5 years.

If that trend reverses and Iowa all of a sudden starts scoring 30 points a game, well, opposing offenses are going to have to try and match and exceed that output. That may result in more turnovers, but it assuredly will result in Iowa's D giving up more yards and points.

Again, I do not see mediocrity in Iowa's D's future, but I think their stats will not be as robust as in recent years.

I think he's as 'perfect' of a qb as KF & BF wanted to have. Big strong can take a hit. Didn't make many mistakes. Didn't miss games I don't remember him being hurt much if at all. He was tough. His QB sneaks were legendary. He just had that lower ceiling is all. They hoped that Petras woulda been a Stanley 2.0 or maybe better but obviously that didn't happen.

Always thought Stanley was underappreciated. He had a bad game against Penn St and that seemed to shadow him. The guy made a lot of plays, won 3 bowls, 2nd all time in passing yards, 2nd in TDs. Not too shabby.

I have to agree with this take. And, he spent several years on NFL practice squads. He couldn't get over the hump to make it to a roster spot (that I know of) but you can't get that far without being a pretty decent QB.
