I looked it up, I remember a few of the names, especially Michigan. Bet AD Bo Schembechler was very proud of that defense.
 




For decades players were taught in fast break situations to run wide, then fill the lane as they approached the foul line. That's generally how the 80's Lakers and others used to run the break.

The Lions were ahead of their time. Notice how Fryar in fast break situations would fan out to the corner rather than fill the lane, ready to shoot the three.

That's common now, but was unusual then. In fact defenses then were designed to force players wide, then trap them in corners.

The three point line changed all that.
