I mean hasn't everyone done that? Godfather's was my favorite. So sad that both closed in IC and the one in North Liberty is a sham

Godfathers and Pizza Hut were our special nights out back in the '80's. My parents would get a few pitchers of beer, they'd get me and my brother a pitcher of soda. We'd eat pizza and play arcade games for a few hours.

I used to hit their lunch buffet in IC a fair amount as well. They did a really nice job. They would bring out a taco pizza and that sumnabitch would be gone within 20 seconds of it getting put out on the buffet.

I really do not like what has happened to the pizza business. We still have a few sit down Pizza Huts around here. I went to one with my mom and son and they didn't have beer. The manager said they got rid of it years ago because they barely sold any beer because the store is basically relegated to a takeout and delivery business model. We were the only ones in the dining room and the manager said the dine in business is so bad that they don't even have a single server anymore.

There are all these places now that are either part of a microbrewery or they sell some "artisinal pizza" that has been "dressed by a skilled pizza artisan" which is code for some portly fella with a beard and a bunch of tattoos who looks just every other jagoff trying to be unique.

It started at Mazzio's, there were other families that did the exact same thing - so naturally we bonded in the arcade room and became friends. When that closed we moved it to the highway 6 Godfathers.

Now I get pizza hut carry out (just discontinued their $7.99 large) for the kids every Friday these days because there's no sit down pizza places to go to on the east side, closest is Pagliais.
In high school after football practice Thursday nights (gameday Friday of course) the whole team would go to the DT Godfather's buffet and almost eat them out of business.

Good times, but yeah, it's sad how much times have changed and how the rise in food snobs has correlated with the downfall of just some good yet simple pizza joints.

Pizza Hut and Dominos have done relatively well because they have the scale to build the efficiencies necessary to profitably sell the $7.99 large pies for carry out. Dominos has always been carryout and delivery, but I think their growth is also part of what changed Pizza Hut. You're better off selling 100 pies at a $3 margin than 20 at a $10 margin and you need way less real estate to do it.

Not sure about the stores near you, but down here in order to get the low price, you have to order on the app or internet. It saves them from needing to employ another person to answer the phone. Those operations are run really well and lean.

MAZZIO'S! That place was great! We always switched every other week between Godfathers and Mazzio's. Every now and then if we were in a hurry, Mom and Dad would just get Pizza Hut takeout. Rarely did we go to Paglia's because it was so expensive, but when we did that was a treat!

When I was in High School, we used to go to Sam's Pizza down on Gilbert after most home basketball & football games. We were all on a first-name basis with the owners/bartenders, and they were pretty lax about underage kids having a beer or two. Then again, most places were pretty lax back then.

I do like some of the "snobby" pizza places, like Wig & Pen, but they do make a damn fine pizza. Sometimes I do like to go back to the old mainstays of Pizza Hut and Godfather's. The one in the gas station at the Riverside exit down Hwy 218 actually has tables you can sit at. We got a Taco and a Sausage from there about a year ago and it was just like I remembered it. Check it out sometime.

Yeah I always order online and grab it after work on the way to get the kids, but yeah they just removed the $7.99 3 topping large from their menu

That's why it's so great to get a $7.99 for them. The North Liberty Godfather's did not impress me at all, but I'll have to check out the Riverside one, sounds awesome.

Agreed. Our kids are picky too, so if we get the Wig, it's generally just adults. Kids can have something else.
