Spring 2 Deeps

So they flipped the tackles around that's interesting. The Paulson boys are fighting over the RG spot I see. I bet the loser of that will be still the backup for the other guard spot as well.
It never fails that every year there's a name I don't recognize thrown on there and that Kyle Groeneweg I admit that's a new one to me....

Interesting to see Reiff in there as #1 DT to replace Bazata. I'm sure there will be a ton of rotating there so who starts at those two spots is a tad irrelevant. So much depth all across the DL is awesome. I'm sure some folks will whine about AJP being behind Hesse still but he's going to play a ton I'm not sweating that at all.

So far Mends is listed as a starter. I'm sure all 3 of those spots aren't a done deal yet.

And so far Rugumba hasn't won back his starting gig yet. Lots of competition for those corner spots. Nice to see Creamers name in there.

Defense is pretty darn young but I like it. Lots of Jrs and younger all over the place. Offense has a nice mix of youth and experience. It's a good time to overreact to it all ;):)

Cam Harrell to running back. That's interesting. Kind of a log jam right now at Corner. He likely sees the field at RB...third down maybe. Interesting. I thought he was a WR in HS, not a running back. Makes you say...hmmm.

The spring 2-deep is what it is...that is, pretty worthless. A lot will change from now 'till September.

It's important to keep in mind that the coaches use this 2-deep more for player motivation than as actual information.

Fires under the asses are now officially lit.

As mentioned by other posters in this thread, one of the most interesting things about this two deep is that we will have 9-11 returning starters on both O and D in 2019. Wow. Just wow. My prediction is that Iowa football recruiting is on a pretty major upswing.

Plus some guys that won't play, but are pushing hard for it.
I mentioned in another thread that they have the chance to make a run this year. But the crystal ball is cloudy on which will be better this year or next.
We know how easy it seems to be to lose focus with preseason hype and if they do as well as they could this year, people will take notice and the hype train will be in motion.

The d line looks pretty shaky in the middle. I don't think this will be a good thing for the ins. In the past the d line has really made the ins look better than they were imo

This times ten. One injury to Nelson and or Lattimore and you are seriously undersized...and with inexperience on the inside at LB...well...we have seen this movie before. It just doesn't bode well when your defense requires the DTs to occupy multiple people. I seriously hope there is a DT grad transfer out there with some size and skill. With Iowa...the place they can ill afford injuries is where they usually happen. Would love to see Reiff put on 10 more pounds of muscle this Spring and Summer.

Perhaps this becomes like when Christian Ballard moved inside for the sake of the team. It doesn't seem like a stretch for AJE at 280 to move inside if it was absolutely needed, although I don't think that would be his preference. Between Hesse, A. Nelson, and seemingly ascending Gholston and Simon, there seems to be a lot more competent depth on the outside.

Noah Shannon has the size, don't know about strength but he was highly recruited.

Keith Duncan where art thou?

Is he redshirting? Odd that he had the position won as a true freshman then would be down to third string as a junior? That Shudek at PK is a soph. Maybe Duncan hasnt added the length he needs yet and is redshirting.

No-one is suprised to see Brandon Smith starting at WR opposite of Easley? I didn't think he would pass up Marsette. That's good news though I suppose. I certainly thought Smith could be a game changer when we recruited him. I hope he is starting to put it together.

I dunno if he's 'over' Marsette so much as those 3 guys you mentioned will be their primary 3. They'll all be in there a ton and situationally. I don't think we should have ask Marsette to go up for some of the jump ball/back shoulder type of plays they should call for Smith to go get. They'll probably use Marsette on more of the deeper routes to use his speed. I don't think Smith has game breaking speed so much as he does size and leaping ability. That kid should win a ton of jump balls if we just give him the chance

Tristan Wirfs and Alaric Jackson seem to be making the hoped for strides following their first year as a starter. It could be hard to keep Kallenberger off the field.

It sounds like Keegan Render is doing what he needs to do at center.
