Jack Bechta, Josey Jewell's agent, on why client chose to skip Senior Bowl: "Josey is healthy. He was pretty sick during and after the Pinstripe Bowl. He lost some weight and took awhile to recover. He just wants to focus on the Combine and stand on his body of work."

I don't think the senior bowl matters. These days it's all about body of work, combine, pro day, and team interviews

By no means is that a bad thing. He was pretty beat up I think this year and adding to it at all with a week at that event doesn't seem remotely necessary if he's not 100%. A good showing at the combine and his body of work should be more than enough for teams to fall in love with him.

i think the SR matters for these kids because it give Pro experienced coaches a chance to see game week preparation and game day performance. that's how many marginal kids get drafted.

In Jewels case I don't think it does. But for some guys it really really does. Seems like every year there's a name you've never heard of that kinda pops up at deals like this. Some of these kids aren't invited to the combine and this is their foot in the door. And you can't beat the one on one ability to meet and talk to these pro coaches for a week in that regard.

Ya I pretty much meant for just about anyone coming out of Iowa. Of course it is useful for the people who don't get national exposure.

The guy has three years of tape for scouts to pour over...the Senior Bowl is for one year wonders, guys who feel they are underrated, and guys who played at smaller schools. Smart move.

Can't say I disagree with this. I know that's not the reason he's declining, but he's not a pursuit LB considering the next level of quickness and speed he's going to face in the NFL. I don't think the Senior Bowl is the best place to show off his talents.

I think this game absolutely would help JJ. JJ is a really good football player, but he doesn't have NFL speed or quickness, in my opinion. He needs to find the right fit. but seeing his value to a team, during a week of practices and game prep, would help a team look hard at him.

Hell yeah, kick back, head to Toppling & Goliath and throw down a few, connect with his home town friends, get healthier....then kick ass

Although I’m sure the experience would have been cool but is there anything to gain in terms of draft stock by attending??

I'm sure NFL teams/scouts would only love to have more access to him then less. That's a given I'm sure. I just think as far as play on the field goes he's got 3 years of tape for them to watch. A week at one of these deals where if he's still a tad nicked up from the season and risking getting banged around more just isn't necessarily worth it. If the combine was later and closer to the draft I'd lean towards him participating. But if I'm in his shoes I'd prioritize the combine over something like this.

Chance to rise but also chance to fall. He is going somewhere 3rd to 4th round and the money isn't that different. I'd like to see him at ILB in a 3-4.

I think right now NFL guys are just looking to pick players apart, Jewell has a ton of film for scouts to look at, he doens't need another game. Also I think Jewell saw that the Sr. Bowl last year hurt Desmond King's stock, there just isn't any reason an AA player like him needs to go to a Sr. Bowl.

if his agent has a really good feel for his actual draft status and this is what he advised, then i can agree with you. i guess my only point is that being nicked up or recovering from an illness doesn't prevent NFL'ers from playing on game day. if he's a 1/2 step slow during game prep week, he can make that up during his pro day.

Yeah I just feel he's got nothing to prove on the field wise. That's his strength it's on all kinds of tape already. What he needs to improve is the underwear Olympics stuff. For him to do that he's gotta be 100% or as close to it as possible. Risking a tweaked ankle or getting dinged banging heads for a week at something like that wouldn't help. It's the do you play in a bowl question again kinda. Only with a hell of a lot more to lose and less to gain.

Get over it already. JJ doesn't need to play in the Senior Bowl what so ever.

Did it help CJB? I thought he was going to be a late round pick. Best case scenario maybe 5th rd. I was really surprised when he went in the 3rd.

I think the 49ers staff fell for him prior to any of that. I think they always held him in high regard and the combine sealed their interest in him. I don't think they ever had him as a 5th rder like the scouts or pundits did or else why trade up for someone that there was no risk in not getting when their pick came back around? The 49ers did the same thing the Bears did trading up for their QB. Just later in the draft with less risk and less on the line.
