Did anyone else see Chad Leistikow's DMR Article?

About halfway down is this doozy, "A prominent, recent former Hawkeye said in his four years under McCaffery, they rarely practiced defense."

How the hell does that happen at a major college program?

I guarantee you that Izzo is doing drill after drill on defense...whether it's halfcourt defense, transition defense, etc. Wisconsin the same.

That should be a fireable offense right there.

I would like that question to be asked of Fran. I am not one of the peeps that thinks Iowa media need to ask horrible questions to coaches that have no bounds and wouldn't be asked by any other journalist in the country...but if I were Iowa media I would ask,it's public now, and I feel a fair question for the media to ask and follow up on.

Honestly with our turnover problems it wouldn't surprise me at all. We look soft defensively and ironically when you put pressure on us offensively we turn the ball over like we've never experienced playing defense or going up against one in practice.

If you have a team that plays really good defense, that team will be in most games. That is where you start with a team is getting the D down, in basketball.

Things like this would normally spark interest from a competent AD.

I think someone during the call-in show needs to call-in and ask about this statement in the article. Call him out on it.

Just for the sake of asking, do you think Fran is going to admit they don't really work on defense on a call in show? I would say if he admits that on a call in show, then yes, he can be fired right there. However, I think he will mostly laugh it off. :)

It would take a lot to convince me that Fran even cares about defense at all. What annoys me the most is when Fran goes 11 guys deep and they still get outrun.

Or along that line that with an 11 man rotation we still don't practice D. What goes on at practice? Do we have 5 guys on the floor run through the offense while everyone else works on free throws and then switch at the half way point.

I bet in practice the offense constantly abuses the defense so everyone on the team just thinks they're really good at scoring. Not realizing its because...they actually suck at defense.

That's what I've been saying too. All those off season quotes about how we will surprise people and players being walking buckets. Turns out it's because they practice against our defense. Fran thinks we are 13 deep because Uhl can go off for 30 every other practice.

It's the point that a former player stated it to the paper, and he would have to address the statement. Pretty telling when a former stand-out player stated it.
