Future Iowa lineup could be in 2 yrs...
JBo
McCaffery
Moss
Nunge
Garza

With Wieskamp and another McCaffery coming off the bench. Kreiner and Pemsl should both still be here.
I don't suspect Cook will be at Iowa still his senior year but if we are that lucky holy freaking cow....
I'll be fascinated to see how Wieskamp figures in. If he's half what he's cracked up to be it'll be hard to keep him from starting and playing a lot too. Needless to say the future is really really bright.

You are absolutely right, future looks really solid. By all accounts Wieskamp will be starting pretty quickly sounds like, he is better than Connor all around. But first we just have to make the tourney this year :)

I'm not sure he's the better all around player then Conner but I figure he's a better shooter and scorer anyway. Conner is a great ball handler passer and rebounder for a pg. I think they'll play together great. The younger McCaffery might be the best of the bunch once he's filled out who knows. Everything about where the program is has me pretty stoked.

I still don't understand the people thinking Cook leaves early for the NBA. Cook is a beast on offense, don't get me wrong, but he has zero outside game and he was not a great rebounder or defender last year.

You look at someone like Caleb Swanigan. He's roughly the same height and weight as Cook. Swanigan's sophomore season he averaged 18.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and shot 44% from 3 point range (2.4 attempts per game). Swanigan did all that and only went 26th in the NBA draft.

If Cook wants to play in the NBA, he needs to learn to rebound and play defense. He would need to develop into a Taj Gibson/Tristan Thompson sort of player who is relentless around the basket and a facilitator for the rest of his team. Right now he's not that.

I feel pretty good, based on his first season at Iowa, that Cook stays 4 years. If he has a monster season this year and I'm wrong, so be it. The potential is there, but the defense and rebounding are far behind where they need to be.

Correct, because no player has ever left for the NBA before they were ready....

I think TC tests the waters this year, and ultimately leaves after his junior season.

Cook won't be the stat stuffer that Swanigan was that'd be tough to match for sure. I agree he'll have to improve in all facets of the game. However the NBA don't care about stats at all from college kids. They care about how you project down the road. They draft on potential. Physically he's already there. That matters more then the rest just about. He certainly has to improve his touch and shooting but the rest the NBA thinks can be taught/improved on as they go. But you'll be hard pressed to find a 6'9 255 lb player as athletic as him. He'll be coveted as long as he isn't bad at any of the other facets if not after this year most likely his JR yr. If the NBA even remotely shows interest in him he'll dip his toes in that water because why wouldn't you? The $ in the NBA has gotten out of this world and the sooner you start your career the faster that clock starts till you get your second contract. The NBA has no problem drafting a physical specimen and stashing them till they are ready a yr or so down the year. Not many NBA teams are looking for immediate impacting players so much. Only the top 4 or 5 crappy teams drafting high every year the rest have lineups that are fairly set already..

There's no way Connor McCaffery will start over Wieskamp and Moss will be playing the 2.

I think Tyler is going to stay. These guys established something last season. They achieved a chemistry and attitude that few teams achieve. These guys know their potential and are having a lot of fun achieving it. I believe they all will want to stay the course, which is unlimited.....

Once again, mere idle speculation, nothing more.....

As a true freshman you think so? Either way really wouldn't surprise me too much as Wieskamp looks like a heck of a scorer and shooter but can he do all the other things day 1 too? Remember CM having the year head start being the coaches kid (not that Fran would favor his kid but just as a heady smart player) and he could play a lot of the 1 allowing JBo to be off the ball some just provides some great versatility. To me that's what almost any lineup Iowa can put out there is. They can play inside out or outside in not to mention a transition game where only Garza wouldn't be able to keep up so much. They'll be fun to watch the next few yrs no doubt.

And that is probably the best thing Iowa has going for it in him possibly staying all 4. I'm not by any means rooting against him leaving. It's just what I think will happen based on the variables. I have no idea the type of student he is or what his major is. Perhaps he's similar to Desmond King and getting a diploma is a huge goal of his too. I don't know that for sure. But if Iowa gets on the verge of being a final 4 contender and he's having a ton of fun with his teammates and coaches this next yr or two then who knows maybe he'll be our version of Tim Duncan. What an ambassador for our program he could be!!

Weiskamp will start next year. The 5th starter we all are fretting over is a one year starter that’s place filling for Weiskamp. C Mac may forever be off the bench particularly if Iowa can land Catron to replace JBo in a couple years.

Cool going early may end up like that pg from the school out west going early. Where did he get drafted again?

Perfectly said. The NBA draft is often based on potential. You can teach a guy to shoot, you can’t teach them the explosiveness that Cook possesses.

If you dropped the mere and the idle ....

Cook has NBA talent and potential...a rare characteristic of Iowa BB players...hope he stays through 4...

Correct, because no player has ever left for the NBA before they were ready....

I would gladly take that bet

If cook has an 18 and 12 year this year then we can talk. I'll certainly root for it, but I'm more realistic than most people here. He had 5 rebounds per game last year and that was without Garza and Nunge.

Perfectly said. The NBA draft is often based on potential. You can teach a guy to shoot, you can’t teach them the explosiveness that Cook possesses.

I just listened to a podcast with a long-time NBA personnel/strategy guy. They talked a fair amount about projecting players, and one of the characteristics he said has not been shown to progress much is "feel for the game"; you either have it as a young player, or you don't. Does Cook have elite BB IQ on both ends? We will probably know a lot more at the end of this season.

On a similar note, but different sport...I was surprised to read about a discussion on major league teams drafting pitchers...certainly velocity is big...but the comment made was this...that a young man, early on, even in high school, can either "spin it" or not...that is, has the ability to throw a major league level curve ball...it is a gift and not easily taught at this level, so it seems.
