Comparing Iowa ‘13-‘14 to ‘17-‘18

It just dawned on me how similar these two teams are. Let’s take a look. (I’m matching up players side by side who they are most comparable, not always position).

PG - Mike G 6’2 (So) / JBo 6’ (So)
(MG better defensively, JBo better offensively)

SG - Marble 6’6 (Sr) / Moss 6’5 (Rs So)
(Similar play styles, Marble a little longer and better on D. Moss slightly more athletic)

F - White 6’8 (Jr) / Cook 6’9 (So)
(Both guys love to dunk. Cook better back to the basket and White a little craftier)

F - Basabe 6’7 (Sr) / Wagner 6’7 (Jr)
(Basabe more of an offensive threat, Wagner more athletic and versatile on D)

C - Woody 7’ (So) / Garza 6’11 (Fr)
(Woody more defensive minded while Garza appears to have more of an offensive repertoire)

F - Uthoff 6’9 (Rs So) / Baer 6’7 (Rs Jr)
(Both good shot blockers. Baer probably better defensively and more confident player at this point in their respective careers. JU more skilled)

G - Oglesby 6’5 (Jr) / Ellingson 6’4 (Rs Jr)
(3pt shooters. Underrated defenders)

G - Clemmons 6’2 (So) / Williams 6’5 (Jr)
(Defense and pass first PGs)

After that the player comparisons are a bit of a stretch, but that team went about 10-11 deep as well.

The 13-14 team as you recall got off to the extremely fast start following their overseas trip and burst into the top 10, only to fall apart down the stretch. Either way they were a pretty solid team finishing 22nd in KenPom (5th in adjusted offense).

So can this years team be that good?

Offensively I think so and here’s why. First off, I believe JBo and Garza are better offensively than MG and Woody respectively. Secondly, 3pt shooting should be better this year. The 13-14 team only made 5.79 3s per game which isn’t great (last year Iowa averaged 8.82 3s per game). The loss of Jok will sting, but Iowa returns 6.32 3s per game and also has Jok’s 30 minutes to spread around to the guards. I expect Iowa to be over 8 3s made per game this year.

Defensively who knows. Surprisingly the 13-14 team ranked 77th in adjusted defense. That team had better individual defenders than this years team in my opinion. This years squad will have to buy into team defense on the defensive end, which so far it sounds like they are doing. Hopefully we will see big improvements from Cook and JBo in particular.

They could be equal in skill and still win 4 or so more games just be splitting the close games instead of losing most of them.

Agreed and the schedule looks a little more forgiving this year. Plus there is no way this team could possibly be as un-clutch as that one was.

Comparing Uthoff and Baer is pretty ridiculous IMO. Baer isn't in JU's class. I feel like people are inflating Baer's capabilities because he's giving the team something totally unexpected as a walk on. Do we look at him in the same light if he was a Top-100 recruit? Not really.

You lost me at the Moss and Marble comparison. Marble was very athletic.
I’m not going to let you derail this thread so this will be my one response. In my OP I did not say Marble was not athletic. I said Moss is more athletic which I believe is true.

I typed in Marble’s NBA Draft scouting profile and here is what I got. “While Marble does not have a devastating first step” and “When Marble is able to get into the paint, he is not an explosive leaper or finisher once there.”

From another site:
Weakness: doesn’t have a great first step or elite athleticism.

JU was a Sophomore role player on the aforementioned ‘13-‘14 team who averaged less than 20 minutes a game. You can bet your bottom dollar Baer will average more minutes than that this year.

Marble was a way better athlete than what Moss has shown to this point. Marble wasn't a lights out shooter and put up 17 points per game his senior year because of his athletic ability. I'm not entirely sure what you've seen to think Moss is more athletic than Marble was.

I think Moss is quicker and a better jumper. Those are the two main traits that fit the word athlete.

This point is the same as saying White was a better athlete than Wagner because of the points per game White put up without being a great shooter.

I guess I don't know if Moss is quicker but Marble was the better jumper in my opinion. I remember watching Marble hang from the rim by his elbow one time in a dunk contest which was very impressive.

I said it in another thread, the '17-'18 team is as talented as any Fran has put out on the floor. Maybe more so. The difference is this year's team has more swagger/moxie than any he has had.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!

The main 2 question marks I have are defense and 3 point shooting. JBo, Baer and Ellingson shot at a 40% clip from 3 last year. If they keep that up and Moss joins them, Iowa will be pretty dangerous.
