Baer is the starter at the 3 spot

As expected... to at least start season. Is this a hint that Dailey might be the backup pg???

It really starts to get crowded at the 4 and 5. I can see why Wagner wants to move to the 3. If Nunge shoots 3s like he did in the PTL, he'll probably stick to the post. That leaves the 3 with Baer, Wagner, and Uhl, correct?

It'd be hard to imagine Moss going from being a starter to not.

JBo
Moss
Baer
Cook

Leaves 1 spot available
I would have to say the last position will be Kriener to start the season, unless Fran puts Cook at the 5 again and Pemsl at the 4 if healthy.

Fran was asked about the 4's and 5's and Fran talked about Jack. I tried to say in another thread that Jack was a stretch 4, as Jack himself said that is how Iowa recruited him. Fran said again today that this is the most low scoring threats they have had and that it was great that Kreiner, Garza and Nunge could shoot the 3.

I think you can play Ahamad at three. You can play Dom at three. We've got a lot of options there.

No mention of Nunge playing the 3.

that's probably a good point. He's apparently 6'7" now and maybe still growing. He might eventually evolve into a 3. I'm not sure how good MD's handles are, but he is a good passer.

And putting CW at the 2 doesn't really look like there will be much of a role for him, unless Fran's really saying he wants CW and JBo on the floor together. Then, it just matters who the ball goes through. But yeah, interesting observation.

I think it does mean JN is going to be given a shot at the 4. If Baer is the starter, then we will need CP to be able to come off the bench and give that spark of energy that Baer brings off the bench.

I have to say that I'm really rooting for AW, but he really needs to produce. I'm not sure I'd be sad if JN took Uhl's minutes. I just don't think DU knows how to be aggressive. And that's sad, cuz he is athletic.

I think Fran is going to play Wagner and Uhl with 2 of the following (Cook, Pemsl, Kriener, Garza and Nunge) at times. That means with those guys in there that Wagner and Uhl would be playing the wing while the 2 others played down low.

I just think it is going to be hard to keep those 5 off the court (Cook, Pemsl, Kriener, Garza and Nunge) and if he is rotating 5 players at those two spots, that is about perfect. That leaves Wagner and Uhl to earn minutes at another spot then.

McCaffery: "Well, Nicholas Baer’s playing on a whole ‘nother level, and he came off the bench. But he could very easily be our starting three-man."

I agree, because, with the right amount of experience, this team could be scary good next season.

Rotating 5 guys at 2 positions is far from perfect. If one of those 5 guys can't play the 3, someone will be left out of the rotation almost completely.

Yep, if Uhl plays like he did last year, Wags will get a decent amount of minutes. Hoping Uhl can at least get his 3pt stroke back, though.

The way I see it is Garza & Kriener are 5s that can both hit 3s. Cook, Pemsl, and Nunge are 4s. I thought Nunge could hit 3s, but post PTL I just don't know bout that. I think all 3 of those guys don't venture out past 18 feet that much this year, and that's fine; we have enough long distance guys on this team.

Last year it made sense having Baer come off the bench because we didn't have a lot of scorers. This year we will have guys like Nunge, Pemsl and I think Ellingson may even have a decent year. I'm high on Kriener and Garza definetly looks good. When you have that kinda talent inside, it should help open up the outside.

We should have plenty of bench scoring. For this reason, there's no reason not to start your best 5 and in my opinion, Baer at the 3 is our best option. With that said I still only want him playing no more than 25 minutes a game. I thought there were multiple games that he left Baer in for too long of stretches last year.

I think I would play Baer the starting 7 minutes, bring him back in with 5 minutes to go in both halves.

It will be very interesting to watch which players rise to the top and become the go to guys in crunch time.
